With the development of human art, we as who create art, have received a lot from art. When it comes to whether the arts (paint, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society, there are always a set of different opinions. Do the arts really reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society? Admittedly, a lot of arts do so, however, the claim dose not seem to be comprehensive.
Granted that, a lot of arts have revealed the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Take writer Stowe for example, the women president Lincoln claimed as who triggered the Civil War. Through her work as 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', we have seen the miserable living conditions of black slaves in 19th century. The hidden ideas and impulses of American of that time, eager for freedom and equality amount different ethnic groups was cleared revealed through this literal work, then the American Civil War had taken place. More important than just only revelation, such revelation through art work more enormous influence, and American Civil war had led the end of slavery. Another apt example is that the anthem of China, composed by famous Chinese composer Nieer. It strong and powerful rhythm and meaningful words has shown that people of China would never surrender to invasion and every people will fight for independence until it is achieved.
However, arts do not always reflect the hidden ideas and impulses accurately. Unfortunately, not all nations or governments have granted freedom on expressions. With compulsive restrictions on what kinds of topic can be expressed, the arts coming out from artists living under circumstance with such policies would mostly reveal what governments want to reveal. The Soviet Union had once enacted policies that all artists should composed their work according to the party line, otherwise, the works would never be published. Even without compulsive polices, government can adopt funding as well to influence topics the artists want to express. With abundant financial support, artists' works usually has a larger influence range. And due to the funding, these wild-range influencing works can merely represent ideas and impulses of society. It results in that if there still a few of works which reveal ideas and impulses of a society; they can not be easily noticed.
Even though, arts did have the function of reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society, it is a question that whether the artists have the willingness and ability to applying such a tool to reflect the hidden ideas and impulses, to reflect them right. When a artist wants to say something for society's ideas and impulses, he/she may first possess accurate social consciousness and strong social sympathy. Without these two things mentioned above, the artist can never catch what a society thinks and values. But, I dare not to say that every artist in our society has already possessed such ability. Furthermore, not every artist has the willingness to reveal society's ideas and impulses. Qibaishi, famous Chinese painter, who was remarked for his vivid shrimp paintings, and Xubeihong, also a Chinese painter, who was remembered for his strong horses paintings. Paintings of these two painters have revealed nothing about society's ideas and impulses but show us pure aesthetics values instead.
In sum, even though arts, as a language, has been frequently used to represent the ideas and impulses of a society. Yet, it still needs to be encouraged. Literally, we should further enrich the freedom of expression and form a well-round circumstance.
