TOPIC: ISSUE56 - "Governments should focus more on solving the immediate problems of today rather than trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future."



The world is growing smaller and smaller to live, the society is getting more and more complicated to delve and the problems around us is becoming more and more difficult to solve. Even an ordinary person have to think carefully on his budget to make a balance between paying off debts and saving money for future, governments have many difficulties in making decision of solving the immediate problems of today or the anticipated problems of the future. Personally, as the destine of a country depends on both the present and the future which can not be considered separately, governments should focus not only solving the immediate problems but also the anticipated problems of the future.

Firstly, solving the problems of today will bring governments immediate effects and the whole country temporary stability, while focusing on contemporary overly makes a blind over the future benefits. Admittedly, in some cases, such as traffic accidents and strike, immediate actions avoid the disorder of society and the effects are obvious, as the Chinese government did during the Wen Quan Earthquake in which the swift response to the catastrophe made the loss the least. But, giving too much attention to the present leads people to ignore and even do harm to the future. In some cities in China, in order to pass the immediate check over the green-planting task, of which the examination is using remote sensing technique to test the area with green plants, the local governments unbelievably covered the land with green paper. Such behaviors, though provisionally deceived the machine, make them less choices when facing the environment problems in the future.

Secondly, solving anticipated problems of the future reflects the foresight of governments and guarantee the society a long lasting prosperity, while excessively looking into the future, then, makes a deaf over the present situation. No one can deny that in some conditions, such as formulating a system or set up a goal of a country, solving the problems of the future, in other words, making the future stable and feasible is priority. Each Five Year Plan of China aims at solving the potential problems in the future five years and guaranteeing the economy developing steadily. On the other hand, excessively focusing on the future problems may result in neglecting on the present problems and becoming sensitive and daydreaming. During the 1960s to 1970s, China experienced the hardest time when the government at that time overlooked the deficiency in economy but only pursued the communist society unfoundedly, leading to the great recession in both economy and politics.

Finally, governments should solving problems combining the need of the present and the future, which ask for the ability to make a balance. That is to say, when confronting an immediate problems, government should not only take a quick measurement
but also design a system to avoid such instances; when solving an anticipated problems, government is asked to exam the root as well as the development. The policy of the Reform and Opening up in China, as I think, is one of the best example as government have foreseen the trend of the global tying-up which called for opening and thereby developing the economy and solving the immediate problem of living of the people at that time.

In sum, governments should not treat the solving the problems of today and the future separately as it can not be divided up and hardly can one be able to do so. The problems of today reflects the need to change the present situation and the problems of the future represents the ask of a more peaceful life, and solving problems is to change the present to make a better future.
