ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
Recently, a lack of consensus exists on whether we should use any means to attain a goal. Someone claims that in order to achieve a goal, we should use any methods, whether the methods are justifiable or unjustifiable. However, I fundamentally disagree with this assertion in most of the circumstances.
Above all, there is no denying that some of the goals, such as the goals concerning equality, should be taken some measures in order to keep the stability and security of the society. Our society has its own disadvantage thus might cause some problems that are hard to be solved. For example, in the field of academy, cloning has been a moral dilemma that baffling the government, sociologists and scientists. In the eyes of scientists, they definitely hope that they can solve the technological problems of cloning. But in the eyes of sociologists and government, they hope to restrict such research for the reason that this kind of research might cause moral and legal problem. So in England, government passed some beneficial laws restricting this research. Although, these laws might slow down the development of science concerning cloning and non-sexual proliferation and destroy the enthusiasm of some scientists. However, these laws are necessary to keep the stability and security of the society as a whole. Compared with the welfare of the society and all the average people, the benefit of cloning research can be sacrificed. Another example is more extreme, in the Second World War, the outrage of Nazi leaded by Hitler is so cruel. He killed millions of innocent people. To cease the war and achieve the final peace of the world, some country, such as Russia or America, send some spies and killer to assassinated Hitler. Although this approach seems to be unjust and a little bit of unfair, the goal is worth to be achieved. At the end of the Second World War, America attacked Japan by using atom bomb, killing many citizens. At first sight, this means also seems to be unjust. However, if America canceled the atom bomb attacking plan, there might be more people killed by Japanese army in China or other Asian countries. So the goals concerning the peace, lives, morality or others involving the equality should be attained by some methods, whether the methods are extreme or ordinary.
However, most of the goals in our daily life are not concerned about lives. We do not need to attain it with extreme means. In the realm of academy, there is seldom any kind of research that are like cloning or atom bomb that might cause the disaster or moral dilemma. Scientists can exert what they can to attain their goal, thus benefiting the welfare of the whole society. When it comes to the field of economy, insiderious methods definitely should be condemned and punished harshly by the government, even if the goal of a businessman is worthy and can bring a lot of profit for his company.
Another factor informing us that we should not use any methods to attain a goal is that some extreme methods can cause negative effect. History has already told us that extreme methods do not bring beneficial fruit to the society. The persuasive examples, such as Hitler, Genghis Khan, vividly illustrate that extreme methods would bring suffering or other bad consequence to the stability and security of the society. Modern politicians should learn from these examples, thus avoiding methods that threaten to deteriorate the life of people. When it comes to academy, scientist should concern the welfare of society before starting a brand new research. They should think about what consequence the research might bring to the society. If the goal is unworthy, they should spend no efforts in the research, such as cloning and atom bombs.
From the analysis made above, We can safely draw the conclusion that only under some rare circumstance should we take some extreme means to attain the goal, which would benefit the society and sustainable development. But, in most of the circumstance, we do not need to exert all we can, even risk the welfare of the society to attain a goal. Maybe the effort we make would bring negative feedback on us. We should never forget the tremendous destruction caused by atom bomb and the moral dilemma brought by the technique of cloning.
