TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
The proper relation between education and individual interests is controversial. I disagree with the assertion above that education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. For students, to fulfill their interests and needs is important, but to guarantee their integrated basic knowledge is more important.
Granted, personal needs and individual interests are the impetus for learning. If education frustrates person needs and interests, education will become absolutely a failure. Confucius, the great Chinese philosopher, advocated that teaching should accord with one's situation. It is the different interests and needs of each other that make every one goes further in their own field and become particular. If Lang Lang, the famous Chinese pianist, didn't pursue his interets on piano from his young age, and went to formal school like others, he might lose his talents and became an ordinary person working in a small company in his home town instead of performing in the White House for President Hu Jintao and Obama.
The point above should keep forward if every student knows clearly their interests and needs. However, this is not the true, especially for students of elementary education, in which situation asks for the guidance of education from both in-school and off-school. The formal education, though sometimes boring and annoying, is a process leading students to establish their interests and find their needs, which is of great importance for young students stick in the Warcraft. That's why every one must go to school having classes on math, language, history, society, all of which are included in one's future development. Along with the help of education from parents and community, students can touch with social field when they help their parents do housework, or play games with their friends, or do volunteer jobs in community or part-time jobs. Thus, they may have a relatively enough experiences to choose their major in higher education according to their interests and needs.
Furthermore, the real stage combining interests and education is in college and university. Perhaps in high school there are some optional courses for students to extent their ability, yet in college and university is where students select their interesting major and delve into it. And the education in college should allocate more time to students who already have clear goal and stable value. For example, the free style of the course arrangement in university guaranteed Bill Gates to have enough time study computer and software besides his major, and thus he became so success that he founded Microsoft and nearly 95% of computers in the whole world uses Windows.
In sum, education is a process pursuing and extending one's interests and need. Before students have clear understanding of themselves, certain guidance is of great necessity. And once they know what they should do, education should make sure they have enough space. |
