In the argument, the author recommends that all teachers in his high schools should assign homework no more than twice a week. To support the statement, the author provides the comparisons that the students in Marlee earn better grades overall and are less likely to be required to repeat a year than the students in Sanlee, who are assigned homework far more than those in Marlee. Admittedly, the suggestion seems somewhat logical on the surface, however, several critical concerns, which the arguer fails to consider, may seriously undermine the credibility of the argument.

  First, a threshold problem with the argument is that the author claims on a poor assumption that it is the homework frequency which influence the performance of the students, however, in fact, there is no direct causal relationship between the two factors: First, the author ignored other elements such as the capability of the teachers, the studying status and original ability of the students, which also plays a vital part in the final grade. On the other hand, even if these factors are taking into consideration, it is still possible that the examinations in Sanlee are far more challenging and difficult. And thus, without ruling these possible scenarios, it is biased to conclude that the students in Marlee perform better than those in Sanlee.

  Second, another problem with is that the cited statistics about high school teachers lacks credibility. The survey which the author quoted based merely on data from the high school math and science teachers; however, there is a strong likelihood that they cannot be the representatives of the teachers in Attra overall. The author overlooks the possibility that teachers from other fields, such as language and geography, might speak totally different, which makes it impossible to evaluate the grade between the two districts.

  Moreover, except for the critical flaws listed above, it is still doubtful that whether the total amount of homework in Marlee is actually less than those in Sanlee because we are only informed the frequency of the homework but lack of the accurate amount. It is entirely possible that although the students in Sanlee are assigned homework nearly everyday, the quantity in each time is relatively much less, and, ultimately, might makes the total amount equal or even lower than the one in Marlee. On the other hand, the author advises the frequency of homework should be no more than twice a week, but he did not notify us that how he calculated the result, which undermine the persuasiveness of the conclusion.

  In conclusion, the argument is unpersuasive and the arguer should provide additional information about other factors that influence the studying performance and the entire teachers’ attitude toward the frequency of the homework assignment, to demonstrate that the amount of homework will indeed have an impact on the grade and it sure is worthy of decreasing the assignment of the students’ homework.
