Artist really creates lasting values for society, but critic also gives the society of lasting value by appreciating works of arts and introducting the public. On the basis of professional knowledge and ethics and thinking with heart, critic's work could contribute to art development in society. However, critic and artist are always in an lengthtension relationship. In the view of artist, critic who does not engage in art have no idea of art.
As an important mark of human civilization, art plays an important role in society development. Artists working is the source of art, they record and reflect history, represent some values, and lead time trends. For example, Along the River During the Qingming Festival, which is the most famous of ancient Chinese paintings, reflects prosperity commerce of China at that time; fashion designers lead fashion trend; Shakespeare's plays has been still enriching spirit world of people.
Development of art need the public understanding, acceptance and support, critic as a bridge connected artist and the common people influence on art and artists all the time. In the field of art, there is no absolute good or bad, but if the artist reject critic, identifying all the art works are worth to highly praise or believe in that critic will destroy art, which would lead to truely excellent and creative artists are buried and ultimately destroy the art itself. For example, Oscar Academy Award which is devoted by professional critic plays an important role in the field of film. On one hand, to be an Oscar prize winner is the most valuable award for a movie worker, meaning great honor and more significant opportunities. On the other hand, the award offers movie guide for the common people who have no idea of good movie or no time to study which movies are valuable to watch. Without Oscar Academy Award or others similar awards, the common people hardly to find an satisfying movie, and would lose interests of movie as time passes, at last, the film industry would be heavily hit by decreasing audience. Besides, collectors and patrons often utilize the advice of such critics as a way to enhance their appreciation of the art they are viewing.
However, there is a onesided feud between artists and critics. When Picasso were asked how to be a critic, he replied, "Give me a blindfold". But, I admit that the general attitude of artists to critics is unfair. On the one hand, artists always expect from critics an imaginative comprehension which in the nature of the case only a creative artist can possess. In fact, according to 80/20 rule, we know that few of artists are really creative and outstanding in art field. On the other hand, because of some factors, such as limitation of history, unprofessional critics, some excellent artists and art works are buried, but gold will glitter forever even though it was buried temporary. For example, impressionism was ridiculed when it first appeared at the end of 19th centry, but this can not stop it to be one of most important painting style.
In sum, artists create value and critics mine it, they both play an important role in society. With the help of critic, artist and their works could be well known by the public. Although lengthtension relationship between artists and critics could not eliminate in a short time, in order to art development , the general attitude of critic should be altered.
