I strongly agree with the author's claim that individuals scholars and researchers should pursue their individual interests. However, I consider that the pursuit is not unrestricted but must meet some standards, one of which is that their work should try to make a contribution to the larger society.

It is right for an individual to persue his/her own interests in a certain realm. As we all know, lots of discoveries, inventions and creations are attributable to the deep interests of individuals in the area. Although some interests initially seems unsual or idiosyncratic, following successful applying brings about a great honour for their discoverers, inventors or creators. Einstein, one of greatest physicists in the world who were fond of physics, first proposed the theory of Relativity. Many, at his times, did not understand it and even did not know its contribution to broadening our recognition. But now, we know it provides great surpports to research the outer space. Thomas Edison, a talented inventor across the world, owned more than a thousand inventions in his life. When he got old, he still kept the enthusiastic of inventing. What backs him? Not money, not reputation, but mere curiosity and interest inside. Nowadays, it is mostly accepted the idea that interest is the best teacher and it make success easier. Especially in America, parents and teachers educate children by the instinct methods and more press the development of individual interests.

Of course, individual intersts should meet the basic regulations in our society. It is harmful to inspire and stimulate those evil or antihuman intersts, often these interests unusual and idiosyncratic. For example, a child has great interest in the video game of killing people. As a parent, he/she should direct and conduct the child in the right way and persuade the young to give up the false interest. Otherwise, it may be one day when the child could kill real people around us. Undoubtedly, the interests also try to serve the larger society, which eventually show our value to the humanity. So I disaggree with the idea that scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. If the idea is right, I think the achievement of the research or study ,to some degree, is meaningless.

All in all, I agree with the development of individual intersts, but we should persue the positive interests, which should not ingore the contribution to the larger society, and at least, the interests are not harmful to others. I strongly believe the value of an individual mainly shows at what contribution he made to the society.
