Merely based on unfounded assumption and dubious evidence, the statement draws a conclusion that Pierce Unversity should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member they hire in order to attract the most gifted teachers and researchers and improve the morale of their staff .To support the conclusion, the arguer points out evidence that some studies conducted by Bronston College which is also located in a small town reveal that professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Moreover, the arguer indicates that although they cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will be well spent. However, this alone neither constitutes a logical argument in favor of the conclusion nor provides compelling support making the argument sound, although it at the first glance to be rational. The arguer ignores certain important concerns, which must be addressed to prove.

To begin with,the arguer
provides no assurance that the survey on which the statement depends is statistically reliable. One must consider how broad the survey was.If the study was limited to a few professors, the results might be attributable to those particular individuals. Also,we are not informed that how many people were studied but did not respond. If,for instance,500 professors  were investigated but no more than 50 echoed, then the result would be highly susceptible. What is more, even the survey was broader, one must consider the representativeness of the respondents. Were they representative all the professors? Were most of the respondents old people? Moreover,if the questions were leading or if the survey was relied on self reports, the results might be unreliable-people may just respond with the expected answers.Factors such as these could explain the survey results and could undermine the generalizability of the survey results.

Even if one accepts the survey results, the argument remains questionable. The argument assumes that new staff will take jobs if their spouses were provided jobs in the same small town, which means that professors will choose their jobs according whether their spouses could work in the same town. But the argument fails to provide sufficient evidence to support this assumption.Additionally, the author fails to consider that there are other factors more potentially significant when a professor is choosing a job. Such as the pay,the facilities of the university, the atmosphere , the students and so on.

Moreover, the arguer fails to consider other alternatives to the causes of the survey the argument based on.The alternatives may include the fact that professors are happier living in the same area with their spouses but actually do not want their spouses to work in the same school,or the fact that the most respondents of the survey were married and being happier with their spouses while the result could not represent those young professors who were single. As a result, the suggestion might not work to your professors.

To sum up,though the argument seems to be plausible, in fact,it is neither sound nor persuasive. Not only does it leave out such key issues, but also cites in the analysis of the evidence, which does not lend strong support to what the arguer claims. To make the argument more convincing, the arguer would have to take the following factors into consideration:the reliability of the survey, the alternatives and more evidence to support the assumption. If the argument includes the factors discussed above,it would have been more thorough and adequate.
