48The study of history places too much emphasis onindividuals. The most significant events and trends in history were madepossible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities havelong been forgotten.
The statement actually consists of two relatedclaims: the study of history places too much emphasis on individuals and the bigevents and trends in history, were made by groups of ignored people, not thefamous few . While I agree that the study of history should put emphasis onthose people, considering everyone is a pearl in the long river of history, boththe famous few and the ignored groups of people devote to the history research.
When we open up some history books or refer to somehistorical documents, it's not difficult to find that most historical eventsare narrated through examples of the individuals. The famous Chinese historicalbook, Shih Chi, involved in many famous figures in each collected biographies, whichincluded the individuals' early career, joined battles, marriage and family, legendsand anecdotes, and so forth. Each of the biography appeared a vivid historicalfigure and an authentic historical scene, all of which were based on theindividuals.
Besides, people in modern lives would rather knowmore about the individuals, such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle to name justa few. Their words of philosophy provide food for deep thought, let us to say, Socrates'know thyself, Plato's platonic love, and Aristotle's Plato is dear to me, butstill dearer is truth. Nowadays, there are many researches and subjects on themby the colleges and scholars. Thus the study of individuals is in demand.
On the other side, when it comes to a historicaltrend, people will place more emphasis on the group people, not theindividuals. When the navigator, the explorer and the colonizer called Columbus captained the first European ships to reach the Caribbean, what was recorded in the history was not justthe leader, Columbus. It was what the whole team did when they stepped on the 'new world' continent that unsealed a new era of colony and add a significant eventto the history.
Admittedly, it is highly possible that the mostsignificant events in history were made by groups of people whose identitieshave long been forgotten. Suppose that without the devotion of the ignoredpeople, the famous few can’t do any discoveries, for they have no facts on datato depend on. As it known to all, Johannes Kepler, the German mathematician, astronomer andastrology, is famous for his laws of planetary motion. However, rarely peopleknow his teacher, also his friend and cooperative partner, Tycho Brahe. Tychois reliable with the most accurate astronomical observations of his time. And hisdata were used by Johannes Kepler, to derive the laws of planetary motion. No one beforeTycho had attempted to make so many planetary observations. In other words, withoutTycho's records of observation, there won't be Kepler's achievements. On theopposite, Kepler's accomplishments in its turn added importance to Tycho's
discovery. In short, the significant eventsin history were made not only by the famous few like Kepler, but also by thegroups of people whose identities have been long forgotten like Tycho.
To sum up, although people pay more attention on theindividuals in history, which doesn't mean the study of history should ignorethe research of groups in history. Also, the significant happenings were createdby all the contributory people, both the famous and the ignored.
