65. Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern buildings? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

As we know, historic buildings are one of the most significant symbols of the glorious past. In order to keep a balance between the development of modern society and the value of historic buildings, we should made some trade-offs between them. On the one hand, we should try our best to preserve those famous and priceless old buildings which have significant research or cultural values. On the other hand, not all old buildings are as important as The statue of Zeus, The Great Wall or The Colossus of Rhodes., therefore, it is reasonable for us to replace those old buildings having few values with modern buildings which have remarkable economic values or practical uses.
Firstly, historic buildings have historic value which helps us to have a deep understanding of the past and also enlighten our minds and spirits as well as guide us to behavior correctly or humanely. For example, One of the most famous miracle in the world, The Great Wall, is always viewed as a sign of Chinese Sprits, such as unity, independence and modest . Moreover, many architects or students said that they tended to gain inspiration after visiting or study The Great Wall. And The Great Wall also reminds us that rulers should be kind to its people otherwise they would certainly be overthrown by its people.

Secondly, historic buildings are always viewed as important elements for scenic spots. For modern people, the scenic spots with historic buildings have much more attraction than those without that. And many areas with historic buildings became famous tourist attractions. According to a scientific statistics, the income of tourism in Egypt accounts for almost ten percent of the whole national revenue. And the majority of tourists are aimed to visit its Pyramid and ancient temples. Therefore, it is reasonable and rewarding for the government of the Egypt to protect their historic buildings.

On the other hand, not all historic buildings are as important as the Great Walls, The statue of Zeus. Compared with their historic values or practical uses, some old buildings have largely impeded the economic development by occupying a large amount of places. For instance, a modern building in the central of Wall Street may bring in billions dollars of taxes and provide thousands of posts for the unemployed, however, if the old building is kept for research or other uses, it is highly possible that its value would be seriously limited.
Factually, the problem of lack of housing become increasingly serious with the increase of
population, the migration from country to cities. More and more modern buildings are required to solve those problems. As we know, those old historic buildings always inefficient made use of. Few citizens are allowed to live in them in case of damage. Therefore, in order to solve those problems, we unavoidable have to replace those historic buildings with modern buildings which allows many more people to live in. Additionally, efficient and energy-saving office buildings or living houses are largely required nowadays. By balancing the cost and benefits, it is sometimes benefit for us to replace some old buildings with modern buildings.

To sum up, whether an old, historic building should be replaced by the modern buildings depends on the cultural or economic values of it. It is advisable for us try our best to preserve those important heritages while placing enough importance on the current problems and situation.

People who go outside are more successful and happier than people who stay in village
Generally speaking, people who have various outside experiences tend to be more successful than those who have not; however, the feeling of happiness is not directly connected with one’s outside experiences, because happiness is not depend on one’s successful career, the richness of one’s material fortune, or even one’s knowledge horizon and experiences.
On the one hand, outside experiences offer people with more chances to practice their abilities for a successful career and also provide them with many more opportunities to be successful. Firstly, people with excellent abilities of communication, persuading and social skills are more likely to distinguish themselves from other ordinary beings. And they are endowed with more opportunities to display their talents. This is especially true for politicians, business men, educators and attorneys. Factually, outside experiences provide people with a lot of chances to practice those abilities. For example, one should learn to ask for help from strangers, communicate or argue with strangers, and deal with incidental problems.
One’s social skills and communication ability would be quickly enhanced in those strange environments. And all of those abilities are conducive to one’s successful career. In addition, one tends to have a broader horizon and interests after an outside experience than those who keep staying in the same place, a village for example. Therefore, the one with various outside experiences shares more common interests with others and it is much easier for them to make friends with others. With the support of their friends, one has more opportunities to achieve his goals with less trouble and cost. Secondly, the abilities of organization, management and planning are also required for a successful career. During an outside journey, People have to practice those abilities in order to avoid getting into trouble. For example, one has to carefully plan his economy, arrange his route of journey, and learn the local customs, as well as learn to grasp the thinking of others. Those experiences are helpful for the enhancement of one’s abilities of organization, management and independent thinking which is indispensable for a manager or organizer. Thirdly, outside experiences provide people with more opportunities to discover commercial opportunities. As we know, trading is based on the price margin in different areas. So people with more outside experiences are offered with more chances to gain information of price margin in different areas and to be successful in the market. For instance, the price of potato in our village is so low that many farmers would rather leave the potato to rot away than putting it into local market because they have little known about the outside. Factually, the price of potato in the nearby city is very high, and it is also largely demanded. Then, a villager discovered this opportunity after his journey to the city. As was expected, he made a lot of money by buying potato with a low price in our village and selling them to the citizens in the nearby cities with a much higher price.

On the other hand, happiness is not directly connected with one’s outside experiences. There are many cases that some people feel more comfortable by living in a small village with few outside experiences; however, some other people would feel boring if they are confined in a small village without outside experiences due to their curiousness and interests towards outside world. For instance, the people of some minority communities, spreading around some poor areas in our country, refuse to communicate with the outside people even though they would bring them with more opportunities to be rich. Those people feel very happy in their independent areas. They can enjoy unpolluted water, blue sky, beautiful nature and harmonious interpersonal relationship without interference of outside strangers and tempt although they have a poor material condition.
Thus, in order to gain a success career, people are encouraged to go outside and have rich outside experiences; however, it is not necessarily to connect one’s feeling of happiness with one’s outside experiences.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

It is often not a good thing to move to a new city or a new country because of the losing of old friends

I deeply disagree with the saying that in order to avoid the losing of old friends, one is not suggested to move to a new city or a new country.
Firstly, the idea that one should not move to new places to prevent from losing old friends equals to stop eating to avoid choking on. The goals of living are not only lie on staying with one’s old friends. We have many other living goals as well, such as seeking for a rich economical condition, satisfying the curiousness of new knowledge, and even for the purpose of enhancing and promoting economic and educational conditions of local place or a country. Many researchers have indicated that communication and exchanging within different places would bring in fresh minds, commercial opportunities, improvement of social systems and many other changes. For example, in the past, the idea of rotting and practicing in learning have long dominated educational circle in China. The most widely used methods in teaching are forcing students to memorize a lot of facts and other’s ideas. And the test scoring is mainly based on how many facts and those predigested ideas a student can memorize. Thus, many graduates turned out to be lack of practical abilities and can not satisfy the demand of companies or employers. However, this condition has largely changed after the frequently exchange and communication with other countries, American for example. Educators and teachers begin to bring in instructional technologies and media into classroom. Teaching and learning theories, such as cognitivesim and constructisim, begin to be applied into curriculum design. After those changes, students become increasingly interested in learning and companies become increasingly prefer employee who have a formal education degree.
Secondly, it is not a good thing to relay on old friends excessively. Factually, if we confine our communication circle merely within several old friends, it is very likely for one to lose independent and become narrow-minded. Moreover, an excessive relaying on old friends would prevent one adapting to new and strange living and working environment. On the other hand, traving to new places or countries will offer us much more opportunities to gain new friends, broad our horizon as well as practic our social skills; however, a confined communication circle would prevent us from gaining new things, discover those traditional fallacies.
Last but not the least, with the emergence of advanced information technologies and communications media as well as convinient traffics, we have more opportunities to contact with our old friends even though living in different places or even countries. For example, we are enabled to chat with our friends by Mobile phones, MSN, Facebook and many other media. In addition, it is very convinent for us to display the photographs, vedios and diaries about our current living on the Internet, And our old friends can easily learn your living, working and studying conditions merely with several keystrokes. All in all, you can contact with any one, including your parents, classmates and old friends, at any time if you are willing to.
To sum up, I believes that the fear of losing old friends due to one’s moving to a new place or country is needless and harmful.Just as the saying go:”space never split good friends”
