TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
As the saying goes, without art, a society can survive but can never thrive. Art presents us with insight into what is eternal and universal. Shakespeare's Macbeth, for instance, teaches us that inordinate ambition is pernicious, what is more, not only a Beethoven's symphony can bring about pleasure, but also transmits the private feelings of the artist, which he had no way to pour out at that time. Artists clamored to attract the notice of potential appreciaters, setting themselves apart as distinctive individual creators. However, an ever-lengthening honor roll distinguishes work first received as unacceptable by most resistant audiences, it is the critic who discover the great value of these masterpieces that gives we decendants the honor to admire their talents. Without the artist, the critic have nothing to criticise, likewise, artists need critics to propagandize their achievements.
Artists are vital for the development of a society as well as humanity with their extraordinary works. In the long history, artists are mentors that indicate the humble humanity on the road of finding beauty. Most of them devoted heart and soul to colourful our culture and civilization. What is more, it is admitted that artists are mirrors of society. Their sensitive emotions and nerves usually render them to think deeper and more comprehensive than the normal. All the narrative arts, for instance, instruct us to some philosophy theory. When we watch Hamlet, we see ourselves in the dilemma choosing to be or not to be, when we read Coufucious' word, we gain principles about harmony and politeness.Without artists, life would be pale and the pace of economic growth would be slow. The failure of Qin Dynasty clearly shows why we need an open mind to welcome various art. Artists prospers culture to live long life.
Admittedly, artists' creativity leaves numerous treasure to the history, but at the same time, we cannot deny the importance of the critics. If we compare the artist to the shiny gold buried in the sand, the critics are the pickers to choose better ones. Critics translate the artwork into a more rational way so that everyone can enjoy the real outstanding artwork, in that way, great work last from one generation to another.
Meanwhile, everything has two sides, not all critics are professional enough to be objective, nor did every critics can evaluate these works correctly. Van Gogh, two of whose paintings have recently broke all records in selling for 50 million dollars, sold only one of his paintings in his entire career. None of the critics speak highly of ''Sunflowers'', one of the greatest paintings for the idealism period.
As time passed by, we reach more and more judgements and critics via mass-media. As far as I am concerned, both critics and artists are undeniably crucial to the long-lasting value of artwork, either emphasize on just one group is unfair to another.
