Rochester vs U-Toronto Econ PhD
Got an offer from both-
Rochester has tuition waiver+fellowship for 2011-12 "with the possibility of renewal each year depending on academic standings"
U-toronto has fellowship(some money)+TA/RA minus tuition fee for 4 years.
in both cases I will have more or less the same amount in my hand left(though one being in US $ another in Canadian $ )
Now I need to decide between the two..my interests are mainly macroeconomics and international economics.
1.The reason behind applying to Rochester was Mark Bils, Utotonto on the other hand has a very big program, covering a lot of areas.
2.Rochester had very good placements.
Yet U-Toronto have placed one at chicago,one at UCLA and another at duke this year.
3. There are quite a few previous posts which claim that Rochester is a falling program. Bils and Thompson are still there, the Macro Labor group is supposed to be good, but Epstein has left(boston), and so have a lot of their Macro faculty.
Whereas U toronto looks like a upcoming program.
4. I have heard that Rochester is quite stingy about money. The funding is not certain for the next years.
5. A US graduate program is supposed to give more job morket opportunities ceteris paribus.?
I am not sure how I should decide between the two.
Comments from alumni of these two universities would be especially appreciated.

lz是大牛，我也无法给出评判，反正，去哪个都不会错的。另外当然是专业兴趣，感觉Rochester宏观特强，Toronto各方面都很好，宏观可能不如Rochester。

UT and Rochester, they are both very good. But I would say the Econ PhD program in Rochester is indeed falling in the recent decade, while Toronto now is definitely the first-class worldwide, with outstanding faculty(most from top schools such as Stanford and Princeton). Another thing I suggest is that u should think about your future(especially your career and immigration status). Last, if I were you, I would choose U Toronto.
