Considering that heroes and heroines arechosen by the society because of their great ability and other admirablecharacteristics, I concede that they are representative of a society's mostbrilliant part of its culture and trends. However, this broad assertionoverestimated the possibility of depicting the whole society by depicting merelyseveral figures. In fact, counting on some heroes or heroines would only makeus overlook other significant part of a society.


I think there are two compelling reasons infavor of the saying that studying heroes and heroines can help peopleunderstand the culture and trends of nowadays. Firstly, heroes and heroines arechosen by people and the rationale behind this is people tend to admire peoplewho have the best capacity and can represent their own thoughts. During theSecond World War, people chose Churchill and Roosevelt as their heroes becausethey are the living embodiment of people's desire for freedom and they areindeed the most capable ones among the entire populace.

Secondly, compared with studying groups ofpeople, we tend to consider studying heroes and heroines an easier way to studya society because heroes and heroines are more likely to get in touch with andto learn from. The patterns of human behavior is a complex one, thus to studythe character of a society requires complicated plans and great human energy.Yet, when we take heroes and heroines as the symbol of a society, we tend toconduct the whole process more easily and people also are readily to accept heroesand heroines’ concept because they admire and trust these people.

On the other hand, there are also twocompelling reasons insisting that studying characters of heroes and heroines isnot the best way. Firstly, mere concentration on heroes and heroines wouldmeanwhile ignores other important but not so well-known people in society. Aptexample involves the development of folk art and its pivotal role for asociety's culture. As we all known, folk are came into existence and developitself among the most common part of a society------ folk people who are notremembered by history but indeed made contribution. If we only focus on heroesand heroines, we would neglect the important role assumed by these folk peopleand thus ignoring one of the most important parts of a society's culture andcharacter.

Secondly, there are also other equallyeffective ways of understanding the character of a society like studying thebooks and essays published. Of course, some of these books or essays arewritten by heroes or heroines, it is undeniable that this specific media madeit possible for everyone to express their own ideas freely and openly. Otheruseful media involves internet, TV programs, which can also help understand thecharacter of a society. Indeed, we cannot count on one way to study thecharacter of a society unless other ways are limited, and focusing on onemethod would only lead to some partial conclusions.

In the final analysis, I disagree with thisstatement in two respects: studying characters of heroes and heroines indeedimpede us from see a bigger and more complete picture of the society and thereare also other effective ways of studying the character of a society. However,this statement indeed provides a good and accessible way for us to understandthe character of society because heroes and heroines can largely represent thewill of populace and the character of heroes or heroines are easier to studythan the pattern of behavior of the whole populace. From my own point of view,I think we should regard studying heroes and heroines as a method availablewhile we still need to broaden our horizon and find other ways to get to morecomplete conclusions.
