University of Tokyo International Program in Economics(UTIPE)

Course Overview
International Program in Economics accepts at most 10 students a year. Students may enroll either in April or October.
International Program in Economics offers a two-year Master program that does not require students to learn Japanese in order to obtain a degree. Core courses comprise of Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and Econometrics, which are conducted in English. In addition, a wide variety of topic courses are also given in English so that students have sufficient choices of subjects to complete their degrees (See Information on courses). Some courses in the Graduate School of Economics are offered in Japanese. Although International Program in Economics students can take these courses, they are advised to check the teaching language before registering for a course. Some courses are 2-credit courses that meet once a week for a single semester, while others are 4-credit courses that meet twice a week for a semester or once a week for two semesters. To complete the International Program in Economics' Master program, International Program in Economics students need to take a minimum of 30 credits by the end of two years, and to write a Master thesis in English or Japanese based on the supervision of International Program in Economics professors and to pass an oral exam.
Graduate School of Economics has 5 departments (Senko). International Program in Economics and students belong to the Department of "Studies of Contemporary Economy" (Gendai Keizai Senko). Their thesis will be supervised by only International Program in Economics professors (See Members). If a professor does not belong to "Studies of Contemporary Economy (Gendai Keizai Senko)," but is a member of International Program in Economics, International Program in Economics students can be supervised by him/her. However, a non-member of International Program in Economics may not be chosen as a supervisor even if he/she belongs to "Studies of Contemporary Economy (Gendai Keizai Senko)."
Greetings from Foreign Student CoordinatorThe faculty of economics of the University of Tokyo is pleased to announce our new English language graduate degree program in economics. We offer an outstanding research environment with internationally recognized faculty and a highly selective student body.

We are a leading forum for economic research and exchange in Asia. The faculty of economics runs seven regular seminar series that invite outside speakers from academic institutions in Japan, and the rest of the world. Our three research institutes CIRJE, CARF and MERC host about 50 international visitors a year. These visitors make important contributions to the research environment here by presenting their research in our workshops giving lectures to our graduate students and interacting individually with our faculty and graduate students. The faculty of economics also hosts about ten international conferences a year. In the summer of 2009 we also hosted the Far East and South Asia Meetings of the Econometric Society.

Our faculty are recognized internationally as some of the top researcher's in their respective areas. Our faculty publish regularly in top international economics journals such as: The American Economic Review, Econometrica and the Journal of Political Economy. Five of our current faculty members are Fellows of the Econometric Society. And our faculty has received numerous other awards and grants recognizing our research accomplishments. Members of our faculty have diverse backgrounds and training. We have faculty members from Europe, North America and other parts of Asia as well as Japan. And many of our faculty have pursued phd's and/or worked in leading overseas academic institutions.

Our school is a great place to pursue advanced studies in economics. The master's program in economics is the most selective program in Japan. Recent Graduates from our master's program have gone on to pursue phd's at highly selective U.S. programs including Harvard University, Northwestern University, Princeton University, University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania. We also have an outstanding record in training our graduate students to do research. Between 2003 and 2007 students from our advanced degree programs published 73 articles in international journals.
