TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
WORDS: 457
TIME: 00:45:00
DATE: 2011-4-27 21:14:34

In the modern world, it is a common phenomenon that scores is the only criteria for assessing a student's ability. the students are compelled to absorb everything they been taught which becomes a processing of passive accepting. as time goes by, the students begin to develop the false idea that teachers and textbooks are the incarnation of truth and absolute authority. as one of the victims of the dictatorship in education, I can not agree more with this point of view that skepticism plays an essential role in the pursuit of knowledge. however, over skepticism should be avoided since it only nothing but harmfulness.
to begin with, skepticism helps to deepen the understanding of what we have known and learnt and triggers more valuable thinking on issues. even if the skepticism turns out to be false, the precious attitude should be encouraged. it is the skepticism that distinguished students from memory machines and is effective in fostering the ability of critical thinking. the history has proven that there is no absolute truth in this world. truth only exist in limited circumstances. to question the so-called truth is to find those limitations and reveal its real image. that reminds me of a great Greek philosopher whose unyielding spirits to pursue the truth get him killed and meanwhile rocked the world. his name is Socrates.
secondly, everyone may has a distinctive understanding about the same thing. so it is understandable and reasonable that there might be conflicts of opinions and ideas which might generate new ideas. in this case, creativity and
innovation relies on skepticism which equates to the exchange of knowledge and different voices. in this process, faults and errors can be exposed in the sunshine with nowhere to hide. I can not imagine what a world without skepticism would be like. there is a possibility that we still hold the belief god invented this flat planet which is center of the universe.

however, we should be aware that skepticism is a judgment to tell from right to wrong which is based on a comprehensive and proficient mastery of knowledge. skepticism after a thorough thinking is valuable and helpful while the opposite brings nothing but harmfulness. ungrounded skepticism can be the termites that undermine the stability and harmony of the society. from this perspective, the students of low grades are not encouraged to be skeptical which does not mean they are not encouraged to ask why. the only reason is that they still have so much to learn before they become well-qualified to question the authority.
to sum up, skepticism is a catalyst to innovate and correct errors that exist in our convention. as a Chinese proverb goes (as i paraphrased)that if you believe everything you read and leant, you'd better not read and learn. we are behooved to have an open-mind to embrace skepticism and pursue the truth without any hesitation.
还有一问题,issue写500字以内是不是太少了啊?
