Issue 32 school or college should pay its teachers at the same rate in all disciplines, regardless of the differences in salaries for related fields in the world outside of school. For example, entry-level teachers in mathematics and in the arts should receive the same pay, even if outside of school, math specialist earn a much higher salary than do specialist in the arts.
学校或者大学应该付给所有学科老师相同的工资,而不必理会校内外教师的薪水差异。例如,入门级的数学老师和艺术老师应该拿到相同的薪水,即使在校外,数学专家比艺术专家的平均薪水高出很多。

I fundamentally disagree with this argument that teachers in all disciplines should receive the same pay. Equal though it seems to be at the first glance, it would seriously mislead the allocation of resources and decrease the efficiency of educational system once put into effect.

The level of salary in different disciplines and in different teachers from the same disciplines is determined not simply by their intensity of work, but also by the demands of students for certain kinds of teachers and the supply of those teachers. For example, suppose that there are far more students who are interested in physics than those interested in the arts but the number of teachers in physics is in serious shortage, what would happen if school or college refuses to provide higher salary to physics teachers? Obviously, in the world where, as Einstein said, most teachers and scholars work primarily for the sake of making a living rather than for the sake of teaching or researching itself the supply of teachers in physics will not increase correspondingly to meet the need of students. As a result, either students’ need should be rationed or existing physics teacher must undertake a much harder work than any teachers in other disciplines without more material incentives. Undoubtedly, the two results both are irrational and can be greatly improved. That is, by giving higher pay to physics teacher, more people will be attracted into this fields and the existing teachers also will have the incentive to work harder, with the results that the more supply can be produced.

Even if the school or college has enough teachers to meet all the need of its students, in the case of the higher demand outside of the school, how the school can ensure that it will not lose some teachers confronted with intense competition for more specialists in certain fields. For example, when computer company or finance company demands more specialists in mathematics, the balance of the demand and the supply in a school, if ever, will soon be broken down for that its math specialists will be attracted by higher pay from these companies. Therefore, not only the internal relation between the demand and the supply, but also the external one will influence the determination of teachers’ salary.

In addition, there are many other factors that can affects the negotiation about teachers’ salary. The intensity of working, for instance, varies greatly between different fields. Teachers or scholars in scientific areas usually must spend much more time on their working than do those in humanities. When we often hear that some researchers in computer science have working for several days on end, for example, the similar cases seldom occur in those from history. Obviously, it is not equal by giving them the same pay. The relative importance between different subjects is another critical factor that has an influence upon the salary. In science and education today, there generally exists some prominent-positioned subjects, such as mathematics, physics, economics, etc, which have a widespread social influence and thus represent the academic level and reputation of an educational institution. To enhance its position or social reputation, any school or college would like to pay more in order to attract high-qualified teachers in these important fields.

In conclusion, the above argument is really an impractical or even absurd one; it seriously ignores a basic principle that the level of salary cannot be arbitrarily determined by some subjective will, it is the result from negotiating of many factors.  (583 words)
