158The arts (music, dance, visual arts, etc.) are vitally important to students' education and should therefore receive as much emphasis as mathematics, science, reading and other mainstream subjects."
Always complaining ,and emphasizing the bitterness they experienced during their course of finding a job, art majored student (including students who majoring music ,dance visual arts, ect ) persistently give us an impression that it is a fault to choose an art_related major, maybe it is a fault even to set up such majors in the university .Lots of us may belief, that it is utmost useless to learn art, after all, in a profit oriented society, how can a course be defined as useful when it has no practical value? But as far as I am concerned, art related subjects are not only useful but also deserves to receive as much emphasis as mathematics, science, reading and other main stream subjects.
It is for sure that mainstream subjects need ,and already get hold of ,sufficient emphasis from school as well as from student. Just have a brief thought of what we have learn from elementary school. Math science and reading have always been our main course and are invariably been requirements for graduation. We learned the basic skills to live in a society ,we get the preparation for our future career ,at least at the knowledge level. It is safe to say that these subjects are useful, but is it also true that these subjects ALONE have secured us a position in the future, and the promise that we won’t get ourselves stuck in the harsh environment of our society, a society full of cruel competition?
Such is the reality .AS we entered society-full prepared, at least we thought we are-almost everyone of us experienced anxiety ,boredom, desperation, which are the byproducts of the harsh competition. ow many apparent promising young people full of knowledge have been mentally twisted and tortured ,and finally being outcast by the society, which , at the very beginning ,embraced them as rising stars? I ascribe the problem mainly to the fact that we are lack of mental preparation-that is to say we are short of the emphasis on the art related subjects.
Arts, unlike the science or math, servers to provide us with the preparation of future career at the moral level. We can take music for example .Music, always enjoys a reputation of featuring the advantage as to pacify one’s mind stir one’s imagination and lift up one’hope when one feels dull, sullen or with no hope for the future. I remembered a classical scene of a movie, whose name fails me. The hero ,Jack, was injail for almost ten years and all his friends and relatives sadly reckon that he have been reduced to a freak. However, when he was out ,he was not only refreshed but also optimistic.” how can you achieve this? after so long a time in the dark and dank of jail?”Jack smiled and beaming:” I have hope.” “but where from?” “I ‘ve got Mozart here with me.”Stuned, the friends said :”Mozart? where?” Pointing at his chest and head, Jack said:” He’s here and here.” As this case illustrate, hardship and misfortune may be always with us the time we embark on the course of our life. More often than not, we can resort to arts ,maybe sometime for a brief consolation, but more importantly, for hope.
Furthermore, art has always been used as a conduit through which our culture passed. How can culture ,a shared system among a particular group of people ,and abstract idea, pass from on generation to another? doubtless, art contributes a lot . The time a painter paints, the time a composer composes, they are conveying his thoughts, ideas, which reflect the culture of their time. As is often the case ,foundamentals of our culture ,namely, honesty, fairness, self discipline, love of country, and believing in the principles of liberty, is often preserved in the form of art. The statue of Liberty standing at the New York harbor for centuries permanently tells everyone that pursuing the sense of liberty is always the most important treasure that Americans cherish.
Whether we are aiming at the preparation of future career or the maintenance of our traditional culture in our college, art have important value beyond doubt. Thus ,these subject must not be neglected and should receive much emphasis, at least ,as much as mathematics ,science ,reading and other mainstream subjects. |
