issue:no amount of information can eliminate prejudices because prejudice is rooted in emotion not reason in emotion, not reason
Here comes two questions: What is the base of prejudices and can information eliminate it? The title apparently support emotion rather than reason as the foundation and the root of prejudices and believe it is impossible to be eliminated. The idea has some merit, for after all, the stubborn and serious racial and sexual prejudices based on emotion live for such a long time unreasonably. But I still insist on a case-by-case study on prejudices, I strongly agree that obdurate prejudices indeed are suitable for the description made in the title, while to those everyday prejudices based on some small misapprehension rather than complete emotion will finally be eliminated by more information.
In daily life when getting along with our relatives, friends, companions and other familiar people, most of small prejudices are caused by scant information resulting misapprehension, which will be easily cleared off if we communicate with each other honestly. For example, while we deeply love our parents, the different attitudes on the same problem between parents and us often cultivate such bias among us that parents all preferred to retreat behind unreasonable authority, and corresponding prejudices in parents’ minds that we are always so ignorant and impolite. If one day parents become open-minded and we become more considerate, through pure-hearted discussion on problems where our main controversy lie, given that we express out our real feeling including complaint and admiration on parents and parents disclose their deep love they usually reluctant to speak out, I believe those prejudices will eliminate immediately for there is such great love between the two generations. Gladly, in reality, many television programs have held such emotional discussion and they have reached big success.
However, racial prejudices especially on Blacks and sexual prejudices and likewise with stubborn root and base of emotion, may be too difficult to diminish. Completely coming from a kind of instinctive emotion and ignoring the general principle of equality in human beings, these prejudices are never ready to change themselves because of facts strongly tending to suppress them. Everyone has witnessed Blacks’ greatness------their surprising tenuous resolution displayed on sport grounds, their special talents on music displayed by distinguished black’s ballads, and their genius on literature having acquired admitted praise, but everything remains as before. Prejudices on blacks still exist in large extension. On the other hand, women, although have shown much outstanding capability more than just knowing how to manage housework, still encounter unjustified treat, even in this civilized country after years of feminists’ struggles.
Although there seems to be a trend of eliminating such prejudices and our society seems to be making great progress on justice, for so many blacks and women have taken important position in different areas and even become personalities, still, serious prejudices are widespread. Someone may argue on the example of Michael Jordan to emphasize the disappearance of racial prejudices, but with close scrutiny on empirical evidences, we will find that Jordan’s talents in fact never eliminate prejudices in America, for people’s appreciation on his skill on playing basketball does not equal to acceptability on his color of skin. To penetrate prejudices on women, we just need to take a glance on people who gain Nobel Prize, of which women takes such small proportion, but it has been asserted by authorities that at least 40 percent of the prizes should have gone to women.
To sum up, the sweeping conclusion made by the title deserve further delve. Prejudices cannot be simplified to be based on just reason or emotion, or be imposed a broad genralization in terms of whether they can be eliminated by information. On balance, I insist a case-by-case study on the two problems proposed by the title. |
