The manager of Happy Pancake House restaurants was aware of the fact that margarine had become an alternative to butter in his restaurants all across the southwestern region of United States recently. He also reached a conclusion that this change had had very tiny effect regarding their customers, which, however, was based on several illogical and hasty assumptions, as well as a number of weak reasoning process.
For example, the author cited that an average of 98 percent of people are happy with the change because only about 2 percent of customers have presented their negative opinions. We can easily point out how ridiculous this statement is. Clearly, those people who complained about the switch are definitely unhappy with this action, but for those who kept silence, they may also be upset about this change, however the fact that they didn't mention it can be caused by their own laziness or other social stress such as they didn't want to be considered as rude or too picky. In fact, there are a group of people who do not complain about anything, instead, they are more willing to adapt to current situation.(这句话感觉和与主题无关) Hence, this argument is not efficiently convincing and persuasive.
Second, the manager failed to provide who exactly these customers cited in the memorandum are. The majority of the customers involved in this survey might be of low income, such as workers and cleaners. These group of people might be less sensitive towards what condiments are, namely whether it is butter or margarine, than those who are weathy and care more about their health. So the customers chosen for this survey might not be representative, it can not reflect the overall attitude of the custumers towards this change. As we can observe from the above, the fact presented in the passage might have more than one explainations, and most of them are not leading us to the conclusion that customer didn't care about the change. Also, for those customers who did complained, they might do so for other reasons. One can blindfolded blame other people or irrelavent things when they feel frustrated or annoyed. So how can we assume that the customers involved in this issue were all calm and reasonable. Perhaps they lost their job on that day or hurt somebody accidentally, and then it is conceivably that they would pick out a tiny thing while in this case, the switch of the butter, vented their frustration by complaining about it.( 你给出的理由貌似不是对facts进行反驳性的解释,而是支持性的解释)Alternatively, the customers might be dissatisfied with other factors such as the looking of the margarine package or the taste of a specific margarine, but not the fact that the butter is replaced by margarine. Indeed, there are a lot of people who concern looking and tasting more than their health.
(我觉得写作的原意是为了说明为什么没有什么人抱怨,或者抱怨那么少。你给出的那些理由都不能说明这点啊)
Last, the manager didn't mention what percentage of the whole servers which reported, or the actual number of servers. So the evalutation is incomplete and invalid in terms of the significance of this change which would be more clear and accurate if we obtain the real figures. It might hold true that customers are neglecting the fact that butter superseded by margarine in Happy Pancake House restaurants, but the manager should be more careful and logical when analyzing the given facts. Because any taken for granted assumptions or inferences may point to unwarrant judgement. Moreover, they may lead to a final and irreversible failure of a business. |
