113"It is primarily through our identification with social groups that we define ourselves."
By playing with our fellows we share the same interests and favorites with them, by praying together in the churches we define ourselves with the same beliefs, and by joining in some clubs and organizations we can find our political tendencies.(是先有tendency才加入political clubs的吧?) I strongly agree with the speaker on the assertion that it is primarily through identification with social groups that we define ourselves.
As social animals, people have a tendency to identify themselves, which gives them a sense of self and helps them find their locations in this society. Different societies tend to define themselves by way of different cultures,(?,feier是这个意思吗?people in different societies would define themselves with different cultures) and the whole society also subdivides into countless small groups that define themselves by different regulations, customs, codes, among which everyone will belong to at least one of groups among them(among them似乎可以不要了), unless they are loners and hermits who isolate themselves from outside world. Why people have such a tendency to define themselves though social groups? For one thing, it is unavoidable for them to associate with others in this world in that, whether you are conscious or not, their activities, ideas and even all aspects of their lives must be affected by others and theirs must also affect others unavoidably.(people’s ideas, activities, and even their lives are inevitably influenced with each other. ) How can one imagine that one can survive in present-day society without any interaction with others? (Imagine that how one could survive in present-day society…)For another, this kind of self-definition somewhat springs from the people’s psychological needs. All of them are anxious of the recognition from others, and all have a sense of self.(;all of them need the recognition from others and need a sense of self)
This kind of definition can be best understood by inspecting the whole human's life journey. 还是指人们需要定义自我的需求people’s need of self-definition?)Children often define themselves as the "little supreme emperors" in their family--a miniature of the whole society, as time goes by, they enter into day-care centers and kindergartens, when playing the same toys with other kids, they quickly understand they have the same characteristics with them; Later on, when they enroll into the universities, they define themselves as students, and in schools they may attend some clubs and cliques through which they find their interests. When they become adults, the professional fields also give them such identification. Granted that they become old, they also like to take part in some small organizations such as golf clubs, fishing clubs, and so on to relish their last lives. It is too difficult to enumerate all examples how people choose social groups by which they define themselves. But examining the whole process of human lives, we can safely draw a conclusion that people do tend to find some social groups on which they belong in pursuit of a sense of self.
Without first partaking in a social group, it is almost impossible for people to define themselves. Can you believe the nonpartisan who say they are in favor of the policies made by either the republic or the democratic? Can you believe an atheist who claims that he or she has Christian beliefs to Jesus? Of course not. It is also impossible for the isolated or anchorites to define themselves in that there is no any social group on which they can belong. With the exception of these people, there is every reason to agree with what the speaker asserts.(我觉得这段不如讲人们若孤立在群体外可能会发生的后果,如行为失调、无法与人沟通)
In conclusion, because people necessarily have some relationships with others, and because people also want to maintain the sense of self and belonging, it is nature for them to attend some social groups to identify themselves, although some loners and anchorites are the exception.
