85. Some people believe that in order to
thrive,a society must put its own overall success before the well-being of itsindividual citizens. Others believe that the well-being ofa society can only be measured by the general welfare of all its people.
Write a response in which you discuss whichview more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning forthe position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you shouldaddress both of the views presented.
The issue what makes a society thriving hascaused wide public concern for a long time. Headed by John Rawls, one of the greatestphilosophers in 20th century, and John Dewey, an American philosopher, psychologist and educational reformer, the social welfare advocates firmlybelieve that the well-being of people is the only value; while the others holdthe view that the overall success of a society owns a higher status. For my part,I agree with the latter opinion with my reservation.
In the view of the former, serving as a regulatorof social conflicts, people’s general welfare ensures the social harmony, whichis of the essence to the well-being of the nation. That is to say, universal associal welfare is, it is in the service of the entire citizens. By drawing upor revising the treaty of welfare, the government tackles the problems emergingamong different classes of people, to make the society more equal and peaceful.Further, in due course, the nation increases its people’s living quality, throughraising the standard of welfare. For example, medical insurance, the primarywelfare, guarantees that staff members can get certain financial compensationfor the treatment and daily expenditure, when they are sick and unable to work, thus, the public will not feel like being at the end of their rope, but bethankful to the society. In this way, the higher the general welfare is, thehappier the society will be.
However, the favorer of the former fails torealize that a society’s overall success, say comprehensive national power isthe determinant factor of social prosperity. The power of national defense, included in the criterion of national power, ensures the security of society.Only when your country is powerful enough to defend from aggression in allaspect, can the society own an equal time to develop. Take The Great SocialistPeople’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya as an example. Although the country has tolerablepublic welfare, it is not figured as a powerful country. As a consequence, turmoil and clash destroy the safety of the society, not mention to thewell-being of it.
What is more, even assuming a society isaway from war, if it is weak in technological power, one of the national powers,it can hardly thrive as technology determines the living level. It is widelyaccepted that the competition in 21st century is competing intechnology. For instance, in the field of medical treatment, advancement intechnology means increase in medical service, which may heal more people. Inthe field of digital products, great technological power provides people withmore convenience. And in the field of building projects, high technology protectsresidents from disasters, like earth quake. All of these are the factors of socialwell-being.
Admittedly,we can never put too much emphasizes on the social whole success. Former SovietUnion, which stressed the national power too much, ignoring people’snecessities of life, headed for die out finally. To sum up, overall success is thekey to thrive, but we can never put it to acme.
