146. "People who are the most deeply committed to an idea or policy are the most critical of it."  


I fundamentally agree with the speaker on the statement that while deeply committing to an idea or policy, people would become critical of it. However, there is still another case that the people who hold opposite view of an idea would also incline to severely judge their adversaries. Both of them, if standing on the rational judgment, are the fundamental elements leading a society to progress.

People profoundly loyal to their beliefs become critical of them. That is because thorough understanding the idea or policy they hold, idea followers are aware of their flaws. To promote their beliefs to perfection, devotees must constantly improve the defects through a rigid examination. In fact, this process of improvement largely helps people attain today’s achievements. At the realm of science, for example, scientists always hold the strict attitude toward their beliefs. They raise suspicion, give criticism, and even try to refute the ideas they hold. After being revised by the severely critical judgments, many famous theories, such as relativism, gradually reach the state of perfection and hence become the essential knowledge for exploring the natural laws. It is the same case to philosophers. For properly explaining the subtle relation between our mind and the material world, philosophers austerely criticize their beliefs as well as rebuild them again and again. Though a satisfied explanation does not appear yet, but this process of pursuit still helps people to realize the true meaning of their existence. Therefore, through self-critics, people could not only complete their pursuit but also propel human beings toward progress.   

Besides, people holding contrast opinion of an idea would also apply certain strict criterion to view their opponents and therefore the idea they hold could survive. In fact, if such comments were based on a rational judgment, it would bring great benefits not only to the idea itself but also to the society as a whole. Hearing other people’s rational criticism, or say recommendations, people with different opinions could find the defects of their beliefs they once overlooked and therefore have a chance to amend them. For example, with the rational judgment, the political parties in democracy correct the flaws in their policies and use the best one to their people. On the contrary, if the judgments were merely established on selfish motivates, it would only generate a catastrophe to human beings. In order to keep their vested prestige and interest, the ministers in seventh century malevolently criticized Copernicus’s theory that challenged a long held religious idea and then forced Galileo who was put under house arrest by Vatican to denounced this astounding discovery. This horrible event deterred many scientists from announcing their new findings, which strongly impacted the development of science. Thus, only with the rational judgment people mutually do get the greatest advantages and ensure the development of society.

In addition, for avoiding vicious criticism and maintaining the stability of society, education system should be the responsible for helping people cultivate a correct concept: one should make the criticism adequately base on the rational judgment no matter insisting his/her idea or trying to deny others.

Whether to complete their own ideas or refute their opponents, people would make severe criticism. To refrain people from unreasonable comments, education system should be in charge of preparing people the proper concept about making rational judgment.
