78 People'sattitudes are determined more by their immediate situation or surroundings thanby society as a whole.

Compared with the claim, I am inclinedto support the idea that it is true sometimes we hold opinions that are oftenfierce in response to immediate situations, but eventually and substantively our attitudes are most influenced bythe society as a whole in the long run.

There is no doubtthat our attitudes are often determined by immediate situations, but this kindof attitudes is relatively transitory though rather fierce perhaps at first. Whenconfronted with a sudden event which may be contrary to our interests orvalues, we often tend to form attitudes in response like a conditioned reflex. Forinstance, when the tainted milk scandal broke out in 2008, most Chinese peoplewith extreme anger claimed that they would never buy Chinese powdered milkagain. This attitude is fierce enough but relatively transitory. After a seriesof strict measures taken by the government, people rebuilt their faith in thepowdered milk made in China, though not completely. So, sometimes we indeedform our attitudes based on immediate situations, but their influence does notlast long.

However, essentially people’s attitudes are shaped by the value system they hold whichis eventually influenced by culture, economic conditions and accepted values ofthe society. Maybe radical or fierce when first faced with some suddensituations, people’s attitudes toward a certain object tend to the values acceptedby the society in the long run. After all we are social animals, we act in certainway expecting approval of other people and the society. For instance, influenced by rock music or maybe the punk culture, some adolescentsoften hold radical opinions on politics or other public issues. But with theprocess of aging, their views become more conservative or more similar to theopinions that are accepted by the society. It is true that stimulators orimmediate situations play an important role in the formation of our attitudes, but eventually our attitudes are more likely to be shaped by the values of thesociety which we accept in the long run.

To sum up, when confronted with animmediate situation without preparation physically or psychologically, peoplemay form their attitudes immediately based on what they saw or what they heard, but eventually and substantively people’s attitudes are more influenced by thesociety as a whole. When we calm down to consider a certain object, ourattitudes are largely shaped by the values we hold which is being influenced bythe society all the time.

从immediate & in the long run 讨论,社会更决定attitudes.
