ISSUE107. "So much is new and complex and new today that looking for the past provides little guidance for living in the present."
Position: The dramatic changes today do not make looking back for an understanding of the past completely irrelevant.
A. It is true that the study of history can not provide direct answers to the problems today.
B. We can understand the problems we meet today well.
C. What is more, the corresponding experience we obtain by studding the past are helpful for resolving problems today.
With the rapid development of science and human society leading to increasing life complexity, people come across more and more and more problems complex and difficult today. When people turn to the past for guidance, it dose not provide direct answers to the problems today. So the author assumes that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present. To my perspective, the assumption is misleading and study of the past is still useful for people resolving problems today for the following reasons.
Firstly, we must admit that the study past do not provide direct answers to the problems today in most conditions. With the rapid development of human science, people study and explore more areas than before. For example, what people in the past could do is to observe the moon with their telescopes, while we go to the moon to explore it by aircraft nowadays. With the extending of coverage of human being, people will meet problems more complex and different. However, the history is the combination of things which take place in the past, and studding the past can only provide methods for resolving problems of yesterday consequently, so how can we expect understanding of the past provide direct guidance for our living in the present.
On the contrary, one can understand the problems well by studding the past. To study the past is to know about the things which happened in the past to some extent. Hence, the person can know the whole process of one thing: why did it happen; why did it develop so fast? Why the person make it--to list just a few examples. Then with the knowledge on the process of events, we can analyze the problems we face today. For example, one can understand the failure of the reform in Russia by studding the successful reform in history; one can understand the degradation of the economy during the Iraq War by studding the economy during the Vineland War. In a word, we can understand the world around us well by studding the past.
What is more, we can obtain corresponding experience from the past. Expect for recording the thing taking place in the past, the past is also a source of the wisdom of people's precendenters: it accumulates the experience of human being on production and study. And by taking into the experiences, the person things more efficiently and is likely to succeed. Francis Bacon has said studding history make us wise, which best illustrate the point. On the other hand, negligent of the experiences of the past will lead to great harm. For example, Russia did not pay enough attention to china's experience in economic reform and take the plan of a professor from Harvard, planning to finish the reform in 100 days. Sadly, the reform is failed because the condition of its economy became worse.
In sum, although there so many problems new and complex that understanding of the past do not provide direct answers to them. After all, the past is the source of human knowledge and wisdom and we should make full use of it in order to resolve the difficulties today.
