whats the reasoning behind it?
If the offer you have is worse than the profs school, then its not gonna work.
If the offer you have is better, then why dont you just go there?

And it looks really bad if you do that. It only shows you are a mean person.

如果你好到老板觉得没了你是个损失的话可以。。不过我觉得除非你是神马research 神人，不然不可能非你不行

这很正常，没什么。lz不要被误导。这在美国，等你以后找工作什么的类似情况很多。

但同样的事情，措辞不对说出来味道就不一样了。要按你这么直接去催他，是要被直接拒掉的。

你应该这么写：

某某教授，我现在拿了。。。学校的offer，他们让我啥时候决定。但我还是想去你那里，因为你那里好啊（把他猛夸一通，此处略去。。。字）。

假如你能。。。前给我消息，我保证一定去你那里，一定好好干（表个态什么的，再略去若干字）。

然后结个尾。

Of coz like I said, everything depends on how you rephase it.

People don't get mad at what you are asking for, but they do get mad if you ask them in an inappropriate way.

If you just send an email and ask "give a job", nobody will be happy with it.

In the job market., it's very, very common to ask another company to make or match you an offer if you already get one. People do this all the time.

Not really. I personally know some WSN did that. One of the boss still said nothing, but has been so angry about it in private.

Well, I said about the thing that has happened, but not "the way they asked".
I mean some WSN did it and succeed, but the boss did not feel happy about it at all. And actually, kind of changed the department's way of dealing with Chinese student.
That's about the matter itself "Using one offer to get another", and it is in academy, but not simply "they way the try to do it".

Actually, if you are not close friend of the boss and some people know what has happened, they will say "that is OK" "That's all-right" bala bala, but that's not what they thought, just being professional. Again, this is in academy.

You know, there is a huge difference between a prof recruiting a student than a company recruiting a employee.
For a company in job market, they can recruit people at any time and there always someone there can do it, for most cases.
But for a prof., a big number of departments only recruit student once a year, and for lots of assistant prof. they can only recruit one or two student from their starting grant, which they depend on to generate data to get next grant and get tenured. There are damn only 4 years for they to get everything worked. Someone get an offer from an assist prof and then use it to get another one, then the old boss could be at the end of that recruiting year, or even passed the deadline, with his only student spot just wasted. The boss lost 1 year of his valuable 4 years. Even next year he need to use 1 more year to train the next fresh student to learn everything, leaving only 2 years to generate data. Also, the department lost some scheduled funding to nobody because everything in the policy is written and can not easily change it. No one will be happy, except the WSN himself.

Hope you can understand the difference between a research academy than a business company, and do not encourage this kind of thing.

oh man, you said 'being professonal', actually that is the professional way how people do it.

The other school is just making him an offer. Of coz they will also give him a deadline for him to make the decision. As long as he didn't commit to it, everything is understandable. But if he already agrees, that will be another story.

This is like someone asks you for a marriage, and you have nothing to do but just accept it? If you don't, you are screwed?

That's insane.
