TodayI would like to discuss an interesting group of someonenomadic people, called the JPs
A roaming cultural group,called the D, let them lives in India andnowadays has become known as the JPs
Throughrecording dating from as far back as the 6th century, we know(?) the D performed various specialized jobs, such as basket making, metal making, and ()fortune telling by traveling a circuit through several small villages each year
Theword JPS can be found in several other languages, such as German, French,Italian and Hungarian
Currently,the earliest recordings Jp in Europe dated 1068year, were found ina monastery in Greece, these recordingdocument events took place in Constantinople in the year 1050
Forthe next 200 years, the JPs wandered SW into Arabia and North Africa,
Northwest into byzantine Empire, and finallyestablished themselves in the southern Balkan countries such as Serbia, Moldavia,Bulgaria and Hungary before 1300
AfterKublaiKhan's deathuntil 1294, the Mongolianempire began its decline, and the boarders began to move east, thereby reducing pressure on Europe and allowing the
JPS to expand more rapidly than the previous 200 years
Theyentered modern-day Yugoslavia before 1362, andcovered Balkans by 1400
The14 and 15th centuries proved to be good times and full of happiness for the JPS
Beforethe conquest of OD(OttomanTurks), the Jpslived in Thrace, M(Macedonia), Greece, U(Yugoslavia) and Romania
Thesehappy days would soon come to an end.
Becausethe Turkishinvasions, some JPs were forced into Venetianterritories,
such as Crete andCorfu
Fortunately,their annual dues rose alongwith the increase in population in Corfu
With an increase of pop and annualincome, came and independent area of land in1470, ruled by a lordnamed Mike to Hg(Michael de Hugot) who lasted until the 19th century
Unfortunately,the JPs in the Bnc(Balkans) were not quite as lucky.
Althoughthey had important jobs, such as blacksmiths,locksmiths and tinsmiths, and were basically middle class, the gov declared them slaves to prevent them from escaping
TheseJps could be sold, exchanged or given away,and any Romanian man or womanwho married a Jp, became a slave too.
Theywere finally emancipated in the 19th century.
Beforethe 15th century, the Jps were known as quiet, shy and not very organized
Theyalso seemed hesitant to travel into Western Europe
Thisall changed over a 20-year period beginningin 1417
Duringthis time, they began to move in a purposefulway, toward the WE, and even began to callattention to themselves
Various JP groups began to displaysome
unity of action, and connectionwith each other through telling differentstories
Somesay the Turkish invasion to B in the early 1400’s, led to this bizarrebehavior
Oncethe invasion was over,
the Jps
themselves likely
would not
have been affected in the long run under the Turkish rule,because the T believed in leaving civilian populations free as long as they paidtaxes to them
However,Jps may have moved toward wU, because some of JP leaders couldn't serve under the T, due to theirgreat loss of power under T rule
Thereason behind the change is unclear, but Jp beganto move into the central E in great numbers, but not without causing someproblems
SomeJPS
falsely claimed to be Egy(Egyptians), and some claimed that they were C(Christians), left to roam the coutry side,as a form of absolution
for their
sin
ofignoring their religion
Theselies allowed them to collect food, money and letters of protection, from a city and then they would continue to the next town,using the same lies
By1427 the Jps had traveled through Germany, Brussels, Holland, R(Rome), S(Spain) and P(Paris)
Bythis time, many of the leaders caught on to the JPs theftsand lies and began banning them
Therewere also recordings of Jps in the British Is(British Isles), N(British Isles), F(British Isles) and S(Siberia)
