Do you agree ordisagree with the following statement? If you need to discuss upsetting or
controversial problems with others, Using e-mail/text messaging is better than
using telephone/voice-messaging.
Since the e-mail and text messaging was invented, the number of the users has been increasing all the time. According to my own experience of using e-mail and text messaging, I strongly feel that when discussing upsetting or controversial problems with others it is better to use e-mail/text messaging.
Firstly, you can think more comprehensively about the problem before you express your points if you use e-mail or text messaging. Because using email/text provides you enough time, you can think more deeply and can make better defence about your opinion. However, if you use telephone to discuss with others, you cannot think about the problem carefully and what you only can do is to express your harsh opinion urgently. Such rough discuss cannot help you solve the problem and even might lead to worse. So every time facing with controversial problems, I would like to think more about the difficulties and use e-mail or text to discuss with others.
Secondly, you could write down your opinion more systematically if you use e-mail or text. We all know one of the advantages of using words is that you can make your opinion more systematically and more coherently. Especially to talking about some upsetting or controversial problems which are difficult to be discuss clearly by using language, it is a good choice to use text or e-mail to discuss them. For my own experience, when I sit down and type a e-mail to discuss some problem with others, I can think more clearly about my view and express my point more systematically. Considering about this, I prefer to use text or e-mail rather than telephone to discuss some problems.
Last but not least, if you use e-mail or text, the people whom you discuss with can read your views as many times as they want and think thoroughly about them. I also remember last week I received my teacher's email which gave me some advice about my term paper. I read many times of the email and thought carefully about her advice one by one during my revising. I think if she just gave me a call and talk about it on the phone, I cannot learn as much as now from her advice and my paper cannot be so good as now revised version. Therefore, using e-mail/ text messaging is good for the others to understand you.
To sum up, when talking about some upsetting or controversial questions, it is better to use the e-mail/text messaging rather than to use the telephone/voice messaging, not only for the people who express their opinion, but also for the people whom read the words.

Both the reading passage and the lecture is talking about the reason of the declination of the see otter population off the Alaskan coast. Although the author of the reading passage believes that the pollution is the main reason, the professor in the lecture thinks that the predation is more likely the main reason. To support her opinion, she provides three point to argue the passage.
Firstly, she indicates that the pollution is not as serious as that years ago. And if the otters are dead of the human pollution, there should be many bodies of them on the beach. Even though the reading passage points that there are known sources of the pollution, there is no evidence to support that the chemical pollution caused the death of the great number of otters.
Furthermore, opposing to the passage, the professor did not eliminate the orca's influence. She thinks it is possible that the number of the lager prey, like whale, has been diclined so that the orca has to change its diet to hunt for the otter. If things like this, the declining of other sea mammals can also been explained well.
Finally, the professor states that the uneven pattern of otter decline can better explain that there are no pollution reasons. Because the orca is too large to be alive in some shallow area, the otter decline must be uneven. Though the passage points that some environmental factor might cause the uneven concentration of the pollutants, there is no evidence to prove that. |
