"The concept of 'individual responsibility' is a necessary fiction. Although societies must hold individuals accountable for their own actions, people's behavior is largely determined by forces not of their
It is common sense that all of us have to answer for what we have said, what we have done, and the like, which could be called 'individual responsibility'. Although some times our behavior is largely determined by forces but our own making, however, it could never free us from being accountable for our own actions.
Firstly, we were taught, since we are in kindergarten, that everyone should be accountable for his/her deeds. If you don't need to be responsible for it, then tell me who else could be the alternative? Your mother, your father, other relatives, your teacher or your boss? Given that it is the case, they have to follow you all the time to prevent you from doing anything that may put them into prison, or bring them a 10,000,000,000 debt. A 5-year-old child will know that's impossible. You are the only choice to answer for the result of what you have done.
Secondly, what will our world be like in case no one is responsible for one's actions? A world with wastes everywhere, people fighting against each other on streets, cars running as fast as they could without obeying the traffic lights? This will become true, if you pay no attention to what you have done, so do I, and so dose anyone else. An old folklore in China, talking about a little herdsman, who do not responsible for his deeds, dose tell us something. The little guy always shouts that there are wolves, and his sheep are in danger, while there isn't even a trace of a wolf. At the former 3 times, the farmers, who are cultivating down hills at that time, all believed him and ran to help him. Then, the forth time a wolf came, he shouted again and again, but all the farmers regarded him as a liar and no one came. The litter herdsman got his retribution that all his sheep were killed.
Admittedly, sometimes our behavior was determined by forces but our making, we still have to take the responsibility to face the aftermath. Imagine you have nothing to eat for 3 days, and then decide to shoplift a loaf of bread. Unfortunately, you are caught, what do you think the judge will do? Set you free because you are forced by hunger? Of course not. The prison will be right there waiting for you. Why? The reason and the only reason is you have to account for your action.
Last but not least, while it is true that the environments effect our actions much, we may expect that our government will provide us a better life. For any kinds of society, no matter socialism or capitalism, the main purpose is to pursuing a more democracy, more convenience, richer and healthier world. Living in such a world will certainly reduce the feasibility to be forced to do things against our willingness. That is to say it is our government may help to prevent us from being forced to do things which we are not willing to do.
All in all, it's essential for all of us to account for our actions, while it is reasonable for us to expect our government to free us from walking away from our own making. |
