Undoubtedly it is true that whether one is able to adapt to changing social conventions while keeping to one’s principles is a very important indicator for a persevering but not stubborn character in that person, but one should not go too far to claim that this test of character can work well in all situations. How one should look on the relationship between his/her own principles and changing social conventions completely depends on the specific situations and conditions, no uniform standard or test to be abided by.
Above all, it is valuable in many cases for most people to adapt to changing social conventions in the condition of not sacrificing their principles. There are many occasions where people’s principles are valuable to individuals or the society as a whole and therefore people shouldn’t give up their principles. However,(我觉得这句话不太通) the changing social conventions that are not congruous with their principles are often so powerful that these people would find no way to persevere in their principles if they would not like to make a certain concession. Obviously, on these situations people should deliberately keep a balance between compromise and consisting. Some great politicians in history were always confronted with these forbidding situations. Franklin Roosevelt, one of the greatest presidents in the U.S.A., was said that his political inclination to join the war against the Nazi was in conflict with the conservative conventions throughout his nation of keeping away from any war outside America. Roosevelt had to make some concessions to the public temporarily, but he did not give up his principles and tried his best to persuade his people to be against the Nazi. As is well known, both the U.S.A. and the whole world benefited from Roosevelt’s’ persevering in his principles.
Roosevelt knew that the temporary compromise was indispensable to convince his people of the necessity to join the Great War. However, in many another cases, people shouldn’t (我觉得用should not 好一点,以为我在上T般的时候,老师说标准书面语是不能有缩写的)submit their principles at all to the changing social conventions. This point is especially true when the pervasive social conventions will lead to some serious or even disastrous aftermaths to both individuals and the society as a whole. This situation is not as unusual as many people imagined. Every people(Everyone吧) will understand it if only he/she give(gives吧) a glimpse to the extraordinary popularity of smoking habits all over the world. Had our ancestors made no any compromise to smoking, the society today would not have suffered so greatly from this bad addiction that countless social resources are wasted in it and numerous people die of it. Therefore, under this circumstance, more crucial test of character is to firmly keep to one’s principles, and any compromise is harmful and shouldn’t be encouraged.
When we highlight the value of keeping to one’s principles, it should not be ignored that sometimes to learn to give up one’s principles is a more crucial test of character. Given that there is no absolute truth in the world, no body can boast that his/her principles are right or valuable perpetually. Although to persevere in one’s principles is worthwhile to be encouraged, what is more valuable and more respectable is to understand what is wrong with ones’ principle and to give up the principles that are proved to be false. Deng Xiao Ping, the former leader of the P.R.C., distinguished himself from other politicians in that he could wisely find out the fatal deficiency in the socialism and then decisively gave up some basic principles such as the planned economy that had long been deemed as the backbone of the socialism. In this sense, stubbornly sticking to some obsolete principles is not a virtue but a vice at some times.
As a conclusion, the above analysis is not intended to deny the value both of adapting to changing social conventions and of persevering in the principles, but to remind people of the basic fact that there is not a uniform standard to test one’s character because of the complexity of situations. Any people(是不是用person比较好) should not be encouraged to follow some uniform laws or standards, and they should learn to independently determine when to give up, (这句话好象读起来不顺,这么改改你看行吗:persons who compeletely follow some uniform laws or standards are not encouraged, furthermore, people who want to give up their principles should make decision independently.when to stick to and when to adapt to, which is really crucial test of character. (不好意思,我没看懂这句话的意思)(698 words)
(我觉得principle 这个词太抽象,所以在论述的时候先给它一个你自己的定义,后面论述的时候看起来就清晰多了)个人意见,仅供参考 |
