18. The well-being of a society is enhanced when many of its people question authority.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
According to the title of the statement, the best way to indicate a country whether it is great or not is by the general welfare of its people and not by the achievement of its rulers, artists, or scientists. Undeniably, it is quite appealing for me to consent that the well-being of people is essential to a great nation. Nevertheless, the achievement of its rulers, artists, and scientists is also indispensable to it.
It is true that the general welfare of people is prerequisite for a great nation. On the one hand, if a country we can use "great" to it that mean that the people in the society must have a high stand living condition, including food, clothing, housing, Medicare, necessary mental entertainment, and the right to pursue freedom and happiness. On the other hand, if the people live in a miserable life, how can we recognize the country as a great one? For example, in second world war two, Nazi Germany used most of its budget and resources to produce weapons and invade into the other countries, despite most of its people lead a hard life and some of them also sacrifices on the battle field, the leader of its country still claimed that under his preeminent leadership the country has attained a host of victories and scientists have created a vast amount of innovations and inventions in devising weapons. It is impossible for me to agree with the claim and recognize the country as a great one.
However, we should notice that society advancement is always rising from the achievement of its rulers, artists and scientists. It is scientists who invent a great deal of inventions, such as computers, cell phone, automobile and so on, which make our world change dramatically and make our lives more convenient. And it is countries' leaders that make policy to create a better environment for these inventions. Without artists, we cannot enjoy wonderful music and films, and our lives would be a monotonous one.
Above all, it is mutual promotion between general welfare of people and the achievement of rulers, artists, and scientists. Only when the rulers establish an enlightened and progressive government, artists compose outstanding works and scientists create new innovations and inventions, can the general well-being of common people be improved. In return, more elite citizens will join in government, artists and scientists, and then they can make more achievement.
In sum, I concede the speaker's claim that people's general welfare is an important indicator to judge whether a nation is great or not. Nonetheless, we should not neglect that the achievement of rulers, artists and scientists can also make a great contribution to the general well-being of common people and a great nation. |
