Yeah. I am just comparing two offers conditional on one getting both of them, which looks more attractive. Chicago Econ gives you better chance of getting in, which is nice.

Well, you completely missed the point. I did not say anything about GPA or undergraduate major/institution or any attributes related to applicant. I merely believe in "free market", Chicago point of view.

It's okay. But comparing to offers is quite a different concept than questioning a program's overall ranking. People often show preference based on things besides overall ranking, some of which you have listed. So if you initiated the conversation regarding offer selection instead of the ranking comparison, less people (including myself) would not have a problem with that. If you are facing such a choice, then congrats.

I was refuting someone's ranking comparison at the very beginning. You are right, most people will have a problem with that.

To be honest, if I were facing the choice of UChicago Econ Phd with no or limited funding vs Booth Econ with full funding, I would be very tempted to pick Booth Econ. If both offer me full funding, I would definitely go with the UChicago Econ instead of Booth Econ despite the fact that UChicago Econ might be tougher to survive. Of course, both are hypothetical situations for me and I was never put into that position. However, my preference for Booth Econ in the first case (which is likely your case, but that's merely my guess) does not change the objective fact that Booth Econ is NOT one of the top 5 econ Phd programs while UChicago Econ Dept definitely is. And trying to argue that it is would be controversial. Either way, UChicago (regardless of Econ Dept or Booth) is a unique place, and they share certain philosophies and biases. Attending there would be a rewarding experience for most people. I hope that you enjoy it.

搭便车问一下王老师一个困惑很久的问题。。确实一直听说有传闻UChicago econ每年发很多没有funding的AD，然后如你所说，“第一年淘汰50%”。但是他家官网写明了每年发80个左右offer/AD，enter 20-25人，z这里面平均只有1个人两次core都过不了然后退学。这是啥情况哇？

When they first published that statistics, everyone was surprised. Not sure how they cooked the numbers. Maybe some of the admits are via the MA program. I don't know the details.
