Issue113  "It is primarily through our identification with social groups that we define ourselves."
There are numerous words in English to link an individual with a certain social group, such as bus-driver, politician, Chinese or Japanese, All these terms define an individual by identifying him/her with a specific social group and expect this individual to be of representation of this whole group. Actually, such identification is of more critical importance to us than to the society as a whole in that it is through this process that we eventually get to define ourselves clearly.
Here, I propose the identification with a specific profession the best illustration to this point. As we all know, living in this diversified society, almost all individuals might seek for a specific career or profession. Of course, those disabled might be exceptional to this rule due to this inborn weakness. But this does not matter since it masks little about the mainstream. Aside from any practical consideration for earning a living, the sought for a profession would give the individual a certain identity that he is busily engaged in seeking. A politician, seeing the character of his counterparts or fellow figures, would easily recognize his/her obligation as a public servant and hence deems it necessary to play the people's benefit over his/her own. Such an awareness of individual responsibility is critical for one to define himself. Similarly, a physician might easily hold the conviction to be alert to the illness of the patient and therefore seek for skills and knowledge needed for enhancing his functions as a doctor. Such an enthusiasm would also be founded in teachers' attitude toward education, preachers toward rituals, and merchants toward markets. In a word, to identify oneself with a specific group, which means profession or trade here, would be conductive for an individual to define his obligation and interests alike, which consists the main part of self recognition.
Another propelling reason why people might define themselves through a larger group lies in their identification with a social cultural group. We are all national people, belonging to a particular country on this global. Therefore, the traditional culture in this large group defines our own cultural boundary; the prevalent convictions would naturally be our own convictions, and the beliefs are our own beliefs. In this process, our value system, perspective of thoughts and common beliefs gradually come into being. All these are critical to define us as creatures of a specific culture and therefore conductive to help us orient ourselves in the most commonplace. One would easily regard a French as romantic, a Japanese as hardworking and a German as rigid. In a word, this cultural identity also characterizes us meaningfully.
In the final analysis, what I want to point out is that apart from the above reasons that people intend to define themselves through the membership of a large group, there is yet an innate psychological need for them to do so. As we all know, we human beings are not only natural beings, but also social creatures, who have an inherent instinct to search for a social member identity. An initial psychological student might also see that human being feels in nature not safety enough to be left alone. We all have a psychological need to allocate ourselves to belong to a larger group and meanwhile require for recognition and praises from this group. To receive considerable feedback and acceptance of the larger group is indispensable for us to discover our underlying capacities and gifts, which is critical for a person to grow up, in personality or in capacity.
To sum up, none of us wish to be left exhaustively alone by the whole society. The innate psychological needs drive us to seek for an identity through a larger social group. And it is through the very process that we get acknowledged with this group that we gradually define ourselves, making it clear what is definitely fell on our sphere and what we should endeavor to contribute to our larger society.
It is always great to be at home!!!

Such an enthusiasm would also be founded in teachers' attitude toward education, preachers toward rituals, and merchants toward markets. In a word, to identify oneself with a specific group, which means profession or trade here, would be conductive for an individual to define his obligation and interests alike, which consists (of)the main part of self recognition.

1.identification of profession;2. identification of culture;3. an innate psychological requirement;至于最后一点,我想说的本来是人从群体的认同中可以获得心里满足感,从而认识到自身的价值所在,这也帮助了我们define ourselves。
