Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: If parents want their children to do well at school, they should limit the time their children spend on watching TV.

With rapid development of technologies, TV has become a crucial part on the ordinary family. There arise some issue, such as whether parents should limit the time of watching TV for their children. Some person may think it necessary to reduce children’ s leisure time in order to a good point in the school. On the contrary, some person against this viewpoint that it may impede the efficiency of study if they remain thinking all the time. In my opinion, I can’t agree more the latter point for the following reasons.

To begin with, I don’t think limiting watching TV will induce to the progress on the study. In fact, it can improve the efficiency. A survey found that a person can concentrate on one thing no more than one hour. That is, person should relax for a while after doing the same thing for a long time. As for children, it is more essential to do so. For example, my nephew is in primary school and their teacher will assign many homework during holidays. Every time I visit to him, he is busying doing his homework. I watching TV and chatting with his parents. I found him every hour go outside and watch TV with us and soon back into the room for work. He can make sure that he concentrate on his work during “working time”.

In addition, watching TV can broaden one’s horizon. Children can gain limited knowledge from school that will not adequate to understand the world. TV programs contain a variety of contents which from astronomy to society. It can assist children know a lot and solve the most problem they suffer in their life.

However, watching TV may develop to be waste of time once children become addicted to it. Children are unwilling to do anything if he is allowed to not watching TV, which can do harm.

In conclusion, the statement that people should limit the time their children spend on watching TV in the purpose of improving grade is ridiculous, though there exists some potential dangerous. We can’t ignore the significant effect on the development of children.

In the lecture, the professor is skeptical about the idea of the reading passage that the collapse of Maya civilization cased by the successive drought but the professor points out several problems with this theory.

The professor first opposes the reading’ s idea that by analyzing the soil samples derived from Yucatan peninsula, scientists found out the evidence of long period drought, which prove the former theory. The professor in the lecture says that the research indeed show the drought between 800 and 1000 A.D. , but this result might be caused by other reason, such as deforestation.

Another important point in the reading is that three serious droughts which came almost at the same time lead to the quick down of the Maya society. On the contrary, the professor presents a conflicting idea that drought is common thing to Maya and they survived over 1000 years, which supports that they are aware of how to solve the problem effectively.

Finally, the professor refutes the viewpoint showed in the passage that the collapse spread from south which in the high level to north which in the low level, which suggests Mayans abandon their hometown in search of adequate water source, by stating that Maya don’ t need to migrate to other places, because they had advanced system to transport water from remote district.
