Do you agree ordisagree with the following statement: it is impossible to be completely honestwith you friend.
Have you ever lied to your friends? Faced with thisquestion, most of us will say “yes”. As we all know, before the god and thelord, every human mortal is a liar. Conspicuously, being honest, in whateverconditions, seems a great challenge to the majority of us, at least. Although it is hard to tell truth always, it does notmean that we can cheat our friends. Admittedly, honesty, one of the traditionalvirtues of human beings, is fundamental to friendship. A friendship withouthonesty is like the tree without roots, an eagle without wings, a car withoutwheels and a song without melody. Only through honesty can true friendship bebuilt, heart-to-heart feelings shared, sincere support given and furtherunderstanding gained. So what I am concerned is that under what circumstances permitdishonesty. In some conditions, it is not too exaggerated toassert that we tell a lie because we are intended to encourage our friends andhelp them to succeed. When friends are frustrated with his failures ordifficulties, we say “Never, never, nerve give up” even though the result seemsthe same. But it does sometimes make sense. Here is a story of my friend,Alice. Alice, who was a little shy girl, was recommended to give a speech forthe whole school. So serious preparations did Alice make that she spent daysand nights practicing pronunciation, expressions and gestures. But strangely, whenever she practiced speaking faced with the public, she could hardly say asentence fluently. Consequently, she was in utter disappointment and wanted togive up. Even noticing that continuing efforts would make no sense, I stillinsisted her to try and told her that she would present a perfect speech. Fortunatelyand surprisingly, finally she really did a good job, giving us a perfectperformance. Had I expressed my true opinion, she would not overcome herselfand achieve such triumph. Besides, sometimes, only by telling a lie can ourfriends be protected, harm reduced and happiness received. Had you undergonethese experiences, you would have taken a further understanding of this andagree with me more. John, my best friend, has some difficulties speakingfluently and has a heavy dialect pronunciation. Others, intended or just forfun, make jokes about his pronunciation. One time, someone was imitating howJohn spoke with funny actions and everyone around him laughed loudly andhappily. John just passed by and asked me why they were so delighted. The more truthsI told him, the more hurt he would obtain and sadder he would be. So I justvoiced that someone was telling them a funny story. Under such circumstance, Iprotect my friends from harm. In a nutshell, there is no doubt that we shouldtry to be honest to friends, but sometimes our lies contribute to our friends’ happinessand success. |
