Increasing students' interest in a subject is important in education. Some people believe that the best way to increase their interest in a subject is to teach them the significance of the subject outside of school. However, to some degree, I disagree with this statement mainly for two reasons: one is that for some subjects, there is little significance outside of school. The other is the significance of a subject is not always outside of school.
To begin with, I must agree that to let students know the significance of a subject can help to gain their interest in this subject. Students who know the significance of the subject they are learning have an idea about how important the things they are doing for the world outside the school. Then they may have some feeling of responsibility. They may also feel happy when they know they are doing important things. As a result, they could have a feeling of self-completeness, which is necessary for students to be motivated. If they are motivated, they may have a lot of interest naturally.
However, people can not say that the way to increase students' interest of all the subjects is to teach them the significance of those subjects. Taking subjects of fundamental science, such as theoretical physics, theoretical mathematics, or some subjects about biology, as examples, there is little significance outside the school, or the significance is not so clear. To increase students' interest about these subjects, teaching them the significance outside school is unfeasible. Instead, teachers usually teach their students the essential importance of these subjects, which means, for example, the simple or beauty of those subjects.
When it comes to the essential importance of those subjects, although it is mysterious, I will point out that the essential importance always lies in those subjects itself but not their significance outside school. My friend who study theoretical physics at a university, which is not usually considered to be useful outside of school, has been a bank investor and has made a lot of money. Maybe because physics let him have the ability to analyze the complex phenomenon of the field of investment. I have also another friend who has learned literature at his university. After his graduation, he found a work about advertisement, which seems to be irrelevant to literature. But he does it quite well. Maybe because he is influenced by the atmosphere of the literature, which give him some kind of ability to do the advertisement work well. These evidences show that for some subjects , the importance lies in the inside of themselves but not directly outside of school.
To give a conclusion, to increase students' interest in a subject, teachers should not exclusively consider the subject’s significance outside the school. The essential importance of the subject inside is also important for students to increase their interest.
