Workshop on opportunities in physical chemistry research at Nanyang Technological University
The Division of Chemistry and Biological Chemistry in the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, will be offering scholarships to students who are interested in pursuing Ph.D. studies in physical chemistry, starting in August 2013.
A workshop will be organized on 27 Oct 2012 (Saturday) at a hotel in Shanghai, to introduce the many exciting aspects of physical chemistry research that are being performed at NTU. Areas of physical chemistry area research at NTU include:
- single-molecule spectroscopy of nanomaterials and biological systems,
- femtosecond pulse shaping and ultrafast multidimensional optical spectroscopy,
- attosecond x-ray spectroscopy of electron dynamics,
- computational ab initio and molecular dynamics simulations of biomolecules,
- application of computational chemistry to bioinorganic molecules such as metalloenzymes and biomimetic transition-metal catalysts, and
- theoretical nonlinear femtosecond spectroscopy and chemical reaction dynamics
Students will have opportunities to interact with a delegation of faculty members from the school, led by Professor Edwin Yeow and accompanied by Professors Tan Howe-Siang and Loh Zhi-Heng. An on-site entrance test and oral interview will be administered to prospective applicants, and exceptional candidates will be offered admission to the Ph.D. program on the spot.
NTU is one of the fastest-rising universities in the world, having recently attained a ranking of #47 in the 2012 QS World Universities Rankings, comparing favorably with Peking University (#44) and Tsinghua University (#48). Experimental physical chemistry research at NTU is carried out in multiple modern laser laboratories that house state-of-the-art equipment. Theoretical and computational chemistry is supported by the NTU High Performance Computing Center.
Recipients of the NTU Research Scholarship will be offered a tuition fee waiver along with a monthly stipend of SGD2,000 (RMB 10,280); the stipend increases to SGD2,500 upon successful advancement to candidacy in the second year of studies. On-campus graduate student accommodation is available. Please note that GRE and TOEFL are not required for admission to NTU.
Interested applicants are encouraged to e-mail their letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, and academic transcripts to either of the following faculty members before Oct 22: Prof. Edwin Yeow (edwinyeow@ntu.edu.sg), Prof. Tan Howe-Siang (howesiang@ntu.edu.sg), or Prof. Loh Zhi-Heng (zhiheng@ntu.edu.sg). You will be informed of the venue and time for the entrance test and interview after we have received the necessary documents.
