7 It is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than it is for them to learn facts.
Nowadays , people are paying more attention to what on earth students should learn . some hold the view that it is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than it is for then to learn facts with which I do not agree.my reasons are as follows .
Needless to say . the ideas and concepts are more subjective while facts are objective . in most circumstance , people usually need to learn facts first in order to form their own opinion , to some extent , the ideas and concepts are the sublimation of the facts or only people learn facts well can they form the right ideas . with no foundation of facts , their ideas sometimes like cities built in the air , no foundation at all! It is likely that their ideas can be wrong . for example . Centuries ago . people thought the earth was the center of the universe , when Galileo made observation and based on the facts he collected , he came up with the right theory :the sun-centered theory . then how can we say that ideas and concepts are more important than facts? With no facts to support the ideas and concepts , we are likely to go in a wrong direction . as my major is medicine , for our medical students , if we do not know human’s normal physiological data , when we see the test results of someone , we can not even judge whether the man or woman is sick or not , let alone treatment methods.
Admittedly , we can not just satisfied with knowing facts , it is surely not enough , instead , we should know the facts first and come up with our own ideas and concepts . only through this way ,can we understand the facts better and can we dare to say that we really understand that facts and transform it into ours .
All in all . compared with learning facts and understanding ideas and concepts , I hold the opinion that they are equally important if students want to master knowledge better and contribute better to the society.
