11.10新东方阅读机经中的阅读材料问题

本人上周刚上完水清401的托福点题班（针对11.10考试），葛旭主讲，阅读讲义中有几句话，不太懂,求翻译

P8：Even less fortunate was the extension of this type of thinking to include animals as well as plants.

p33: The places where they rise were once dry, and there is a limit to their operations, but there is none to time.

p39: Usually, amphorae are two-handled terracotta containers with a globular/cylindrical body, a rim of variou shapes, and a spiked or, less commonly, flat base. The spike was suited for a stable storage arrangment in the ship and it worked as third handle in the process of emptying the container. 关键是红色字体部分，这个amphorae容器的base是spiked的？spiked是不是尖的意思？尖底怎么能suited for a stable storage？

p50: Comparison of a subscriber list for 1849 with data from the 1850 census indicates a readership dominated by property owners but reflecting a cross-section of the population, with personal accounts suggesting the newspaper also reached a wider nonsubscribing audience.

咱也有点看不懂啊，句子都很奇怪。
楼主这些都是阅读或者综合写作的机经吧。这几部分考过的人回忆起来，不仅残缺不全，而且准确度也很难确保的。

是阅读的参考资料，也不是机经，刚在北京新东方上完点题班，这是老师给的阅读资料，说是这里面的话题可能可以覆盖到托福阅读的话题，且都是美国人写的
