Digital Native
Now a day, a person who works in an office can completely finish his work only with a computer, a woman who wants to buy a dress online is only doing by a click work in 10 second, parents can see their son in thousands of miles away by using a video call. Our lives are inundated with ever-accelerated updating of digital high technology. It is not only changing our environment, but also changes our lifestyle. (John Palfrey. And Urs Gasser)
In my generation, 1980s, we were growing with the booming social digital technologies. For this reason, we were called Digital Natives. (John Palfrey. And Urs Gasser) I remember when I was a middle school student; my life became to change by a telephone line connected to my computer which could let me access the ‘Internet’. At that time, in China, Internet was a new word. People who heard about this word would logically think about that was a kind of net can catch fish or something, it was an antiquated joke, but we really didn’t have a completely known about the Internet. Occasionally, there was a new foundation appear at this time, which called ‘Net Bar’. Net Bar is a place has plenty of computers connect to the Internet and offer the Internet surf service to the people who don’t have computer in there house or their computer don’t connect to the Internet but really eager to learn more about the amazing Internet. Net Bar was very popular in China. Usually, people who went to Net Bar are teenager because they are so inquisitive with the fangled thing. People can frequently saw abundant students went to the Net Bar together after school, study intensively in the networking technology, and share some good web sites which have a great recourse for study. Even I have internet in my house, I also like to go to Net Bar with my friends because I like the atmosphere that we learn and discuss about the experience together over there. This experience has a great impact to my future. I am now learning the information & communication technology major in college. Indeed, I am not only known how to use the internet but also know what the internet exactly is and build an internet. To some extent, I deiced to work in networking as my career life is mostly impact from my teenager experience, grow up as a Digital Native.
Since I known I was a Digital Native, I began to think that what is the digital technology means to my life? Honestly, I sometimes afraid that I would be the guy as the book said, ‘They will dropt and pal around with virtual Neopet online instead of pound puppies, and my social interactions, friendships, civic activities are all mediated by digital technologies.’ (John Palfrey. And Urs Gasser) Even I was born in a society full with the digital technology, I still hope I can be a normal people can enjoy my life more simple. For instance, I hope when I retire, I can be my grandfather who can go walking in the city every morning, has a puppies which names Sunny would came with; and invited some old friends came to his birthday party, sitting and talking together. There is no doubt that, digital technology makes the virtual environment more and more approach to our real environment. People even can do their civic activities, social activities, and living activities by a computer. Virtual life is seems more and more comfortable to substitute our real life. However, I want my life more approach to nature. We can only change by ourselves, not digital technology. Fortunately, there is a report supporting my idea.
A report from Open University research explodes that, we are not the only generation controlling the digital technology. There is no evidence of a clear-cut digital divide that use of technology varies with age, old people also can easily learn how to use the technology for study. (Gerald Haigh) So we can’t separately point out that the generation of Digital Native different from each generation, the digital technology is not only be used by Digital Native, but also for the older generation. To some extent, the seniors need the digital technology for auxiliary more than digital native because of their physical quality; a wide range of computing tasks would defeat a senior in one second. In my view, the main point of the digital technology is not who can use it, but how we use it. Digital technology is helping human being improve living standard, if we used the digital technology to build a Digital Native that separate from the others generation and became a generation gap, it would violated its original intention.
In conclusion, Digital Native is a universal phenomenon in our society, and it is a trend to become a world supporting by digital technology. People in our generation are lucky. We grow up with the developing digital technology and enjoy the convenient from this technology. With this technology, we are changing. We change the goal that we use to believe, change the way that we communicate, and change the way we study. And the people who are going to adapt these change, we called Digital Native.
