CH11 Nonfiction as Literature

Novels used to be popular before World War II, however, especially since the wide-spread of television, nonfiction took its place. Journalism calls for redefining because journalism and literature are not mutual exclusion.

I guess the writer's purpose is to encourage students not be afraid of writing nonfictions. Nonfiction enables people to write about what they know or can observe or can find out. The content can be closely related with daily life and observations thus comparatively easily dealt with.

The first passage is about a solid solution with lithium-ion battery. It is around us because it is in our cell-phones, ipad, and ipod. Taking little space, it carries a lot of energy and heat and can cause serious safety problems if being treated careless. One scientist deal with soy protein which is said to solve some problems.

Well, a comment on those zero mark essays from the national college entrance examination. However, I guess the writer is making a big joke. As far as I know, those so-called and fast wide-spread zero mark essay were actually created by someone who is about to make a joke about the reality. They just took advantage of the title of the exam and faked some essays, called it a zero-one. I cannot explain and understand why such a serious website would blog such a passage. LOL

It is a warm description, about a film made upon a family. It calls me the micro-movie made by my sister and her boyfriend.
Sometimes you really need inspirations to make a film out--to walk around to collect materials and try to figure that how to interpret all of your emotions. It seems easy to have an idea but hard to express them in a fair and unbiased perspective.

Unlimited vacation for all actually tells a situation that employees could make arrangement for their own time: for example, if I finish my task of the day before afternoon, I could take the rest of my time on my own, instead of staying in the office.

This is because under the working pressure, if you do not do your work, someone would take the task and take your position. It results in that many workers, even on vacation, would check their mail-box habitually and get back to work if required by their boss.

New York Times BOOK REVIEW

Lost Girls

A novel tells stories of five women, who was killed and found days later, all make prostitution deals and have problems with drugs or drunk. The similarities of their life experiences can be summarized as they were born in a poor family-- not only without much money, also with poor parents--for example, their mums had sexual deal at an early age and were caught by drugs and drunk problems. The whole story seems to be a series process.

It is a time of new technology--based on Internet deals and news report afterwards, but a story with old business types.

Well, it tells another story of refined engine of diesel because normal guys usually consider petrol-cars or electric cars are superior than diesel. However, Mazda and Toyota, together with quite some big motor companies are all concentrated on diesel cars because it could save much energy and efficiency.
It provides 30% better fuel economy and much pulling power.
The lower cylinder pressure offers two advantages: it reduces thermal and mechanical stresses in the engine, and produces less friction as well. In addition, there is benefits of emission part.

It tells a story that most people, who consider they are consuming wholesome food would hardly imagine, that we are living under a refrigerated world. In other words, most supplied food are stored in warehouses with refrigerator. Actually, I am not surprised for the result cause under the modern industrialization, this is the proper trend.

Do most businesses adapt too slowly to change?

Thanks to the technology development, the networked business cycle is running too fast to change. Kodak, which used to be the giant company in camera, however, was forced to bankrupt after the digital photography. Any company which cannot catch up with changes would largely possibly be banished out of the business.


The proposer's opening remarks
Change is not an easy work because it requires several levels to variate.
Firstly, most business leaders fail to recognize the time to change. Both previous Giant corporations Nokia and Kodak are perfect examples here. Leaders fail to keep up with everyday discovery and the companies stop keeping going.

Secondly, to enact changes is also difficult. For example, when the leaders finally determine to change, it means that they have to redirect or reorient themselves completely. --It is a great challenge for any individual corporations.

Finally, leaders are usually inconvenient with the fundamental changes needed from the bottom .

The bottom line is that most businesses are slow to change because most leaders are slow to pay attention to each stage of transformation and what it demands of them personally. In fact, in this business world, it is an individual act of faith where senior leader must take the first step. Steve Jobs definitely did his job well.

The opposition thinks business have to change their traditional methods to a wiser method:
BP is an exemplar example: there is no such thing as breakthrough technologies: there are only breakthrough business applications of technology.
