Born from an aesthetic that aims to induce a sense of inner calm, new age music emerged from the meditational and holistic fields. Generally, these are harmonious and nonthreatening albums that are allied with new age philosophies encouraging spiritual transcendence and physical healing. Some of these albums are artistically satisfying as well as therapeutic. Lesser musicians, however, often make ridiculous claims in the liner notes as to their ability to catapult listeners into advanced spiritual states through specially designed sonic vibrations and "immaculately conceived" musical ideas.

Thanks to its distinct, downright catchy single "Orinoco Flow," which amusingly referenced both her record company boss Rob Dickins and co-producer Ross Cullum in the lyrics, Enya's second album Watermark established her as the unexpected queen of gentle, Celtic-tinged new age music. To be sure, her success was as much due to marketing a niche audience in later years equally in love with Yanni and Michael Flatley's Irish dancing, but Enya's rarely given a sense of pandering in her work. She does what she does, just as she did before her fame. Admittedly, avoiding overblown concerts run constantly on PBS hasn't hurt. Indeed, the subtlety that characterizes her work at her best dominates Watermark, with the lovely title track, her multi-tracked voice gently swooping among the lead piano, and strings like a softly haunting ghost, as fine an example as any. "Orinoco Flow" itself, for all its implicit dramatics, gently charges instead of piling things on, while the organ-led "On Your Shore" feels like a hushed church piece. Elsewhere, meanwhile, Enya lets in a darkness not overly present on The Celts, resulting in work even more appropriate for a moody soundtrack than that album. "Cursum Perficio," with her steady chanting-via-overdub of the title phrase, gets more sweeping and passionate as the song progresses, matched in slightly calmer results with the equally compelling "The Longships." "Storms in Africa," meanwhile, uses drums from Chris Hughes to add to the understated, evocative fire of the song, which certainly lives up to its name. Watermark ends with a fascinating piece, "Na Laetha Geal M'Oige," where fellow Irish modern/traditional fusion artist Davy Spillane adds a gripping, heartbreaking uilleann pipe solo to the otherwise calm synth-based performance. It's a perfect combination of timelessness and technology, an appropriate end to this fine album.

Secret Garden is Rolf Lovland, (Norwegian composer, piano and keyboards), and Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry. The album, however, offers much more than this duo; it is awash in orchestral strings (real ones), a choir (real one), and as many percussionists, harps, fiddles, keyboards, and whistles as are needed. Songs of the Secret Garden, a chart-topper in Europe, is unabashedly romantic, absolutely gorgeous. "Sigma," featuring boy soprano Rhonan Sugrue and the Irish National Choir, is very pensive, like dried flowers left, an expected return disappointed. The lyrics begin "I search for the sign that will set my soul free." Although Celtic music fans will find many moments of bittersweet nostalgia between the violin, pipes, and pennywhistles, the album's closest musical relation might just be the intimate works of Maurice Ravel, particularly his "Pavanne for a Dead Princess." Romantic themes of true depth, played full out. Secret Garden is not afraid of tenderness nor beauty. (Note: Riverdance fans will enjoy the jaunty Irish dance, "The Rap.")

Why? i heard his music when i was a freshman.  I also remember clearly the whole story i met him. He is another presentation of New Age music. Someone judged :" THE MUSIC OF THE NEW AGE CAN BE NEATLY DIVIDED AS BEFORE YANNI AND AFTER YANNI."

Before him, the new age bubbled blow the surface of popular consciousness as an exotic music realm where new acoustic musicians, post-progressive rockers, electronic space knob-twiddlers, and neo-classical composers were lumped in with artists making healing and meditation music often defined by mystical imagery and hot-tubs. Every so often one of them would pop up to the surface, pianist George Winston, Swiss harpist Andereas Vollenweider and Japanese synthesist Kitaro being among the most notable.

The came Yanni, and suddenly a boutique music genre became a global phenomenon. Yanni coalesced the electronic, progressive and neo-classical wings of the New Age and added something notably lacking in the music :drama and charisma.

The last two phrases were quoted from one of my favorite CDs introduction (ultimate YANNI 2003 BMG Heritage.01934181062). The following is my feelings and my story. i am poor in English, but i will try my best to express myself.  

When i met him, i began my university life in 1998 at a different city. There are many things for me to find and enjoy. One day i went to the broadcast station to get my records. i saw a bulletin list some music that can be freely recorded. Of course it is another kind of pirates  , but this phenomenon is common then in China. Most of them were listening tapes, but at the end of list were some music including YANNI. I picked some of them to record, but one spare, yes, the one is YANNI.

The special is the concert recording of his first China travel, and the concert was held at the Tai Temple. When I heard it first time, I felt sorry to waste one of my cassettes for the music is not only hard to understand but also not a soft rhythm. So I did not touch it again.

Till one day, I was depressed for some reasons , I was tired of all the tapes, I found the one I was not favorite of. I sent it to my walkman, played. The different feelings came to my body during the sounds shocked my ear. Yes, it is an exotic one. The one is strange to me before. And the used musical instruments were greatly various from I knew. Sometimes it seems like rockers, sometimes in eastern the next will come from another planet. But all these elements were organically melt into one. I was deeply dipped into the music, almost forgot myself. It is rarely happened before. From then on, I become more and more like this kind of music.

Yanni's grandiose keyboard style is both accessible and exciting, two elements that have led to his success in the realm of adult-alternative radio. His explosive, pop-influenced instrumentals and romantic pianistic ballads have also made him a popular touring and recording artist for the Private Music label. In addition to his original television, commercial, and film scores, Yanni's music has been used extensively on programs like Wide World of Sports and coverage of the Olympic Games. This aspect of his career seems especially appropriate when you consider that he achieved early success not as a musician, but as a member of the Greek National Swimming Team. (He broke the national freestyle record at age 14.) Born in Kalamata, Greece, Yanni arrived in the U.S. after high school and obtained a degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota before diving headfirst into music. It didn't take long for the self-taught keyboardist and composer to establish himself as a studio musician, jingles composer, and producer. For a time in the mid-'90s, Private Music was issuing Yanni samplers on a regular basis, prompting the casual fan to wonder if the love-him-or-hate-him new age phenomenon had ever indeed released a real studio album before. This collection is pretty much the definitive one with 15 tracks, including his most recognizable hits: the lush, percussive "Once Upon a Time," the sweeping, global-minded "Song for Antartica," the exotic, chant-enhanced "Aria," and the impossibly melodic "A Love for Life." Most of the tunes follow a similar pattern of pretty melody over just slightly bombastic electronic percussion and orchestra, but others, like "Reflections of Passion," have a softer classical mood focused more on the acoustic piano. "The End of August" from Live at the Acropolis adds to that flavor a beautiful violin line, to which Yanni's piano serves as a harmonic accompaniment. "Marching Season" from that same release displays an aggressive musicianship that Yanni's other material rarely approaches. A lot of the anti-Yanni sentiment comes not from people who've heard the bulk of his material, but those who simply reject the idea of simply stated, pretty, top-down music as bad for some reason. It never gets too deep, but the same could be said of a lot of pop music. For those new to the Yanni experience, this disc is a good place to start.
