Tips for Applying to Graduate Programs in the Arts and Sciences

As most programs do not conduct interviews, the personal statement is often the applicant’s only opportunity to convey a sense of themselves as an individual with unique experiences and motivations. Provide concise and clear information about your qualifications in your proposed field, noting specific details about professional experience or academic research that you have conducted with faculty which has helped to prepare you to undertake the rigors of graduate study. Be sure to leave time after you have completed the personal statement to obtain feedback from faculty members, mentors and students at your current university to refine your thoughts and ideas.

The Statement of Purpose is one of the most important components of your application.
个人陈述你是申请中最重要的部分之一。

1. Where to Begin? Be Purposeful. 从哪儿下笔？要有目的性！

2. Have a well-developed thesis statement.中心明确。

3. Be Clear.文章表达清晰。

4. Avoid clichés and generalizations.避免陈词滥调不泛泛而谈。

5. Make a PIE (point, illustration, explanation) of each paragraph. 每一段都要有详细论述。

6. Show, Don’t tell. 别平铺直叙，大胆秀出来!!

7. Provide just enough details.恰到好处的提供细节。

8. Be humble. 谦虚点。

9. Strive for coherence and flow.力求文章连贯流畅。

10. Intros and conclusions: hooks and/or bookends. 写一个吸引人的开头，或首尾呼应。

11. Honesty Matters.诚实不可或缺。

12. Don’t dwell on the negatives, but accentuate the positives.
