Charles Frazier's acclaimed novel of a love story set amid the devastating American Civil War Between the States comes to the screen as a romantic drama starring Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. Alan Silverman has a look at Cold Mountain

As the clouds of Civil War begin to gather in the 1860s, Jane Till Educated Ada played by Nicole Kidman joins her father far from the front lines in the rural north Carolina town of Cold Mountain. There she meets Adman, Jude Law, and the attractions between the two are undeniable. But before romance can blossom, war breaks out and Adman must go off to fight for the South.

"I'd be waiting for you."

Kidman says she finds much to admire in Ada when she describes as a very modern woman.

"I think that she is so pure, that there is purity to her. And an innocence in a strange way that she says something which is I will be waiting for you. And she does and she never wavers off that. She has one of my favorite lines, which is: Come back to me as mountain requests. And I love that line because of its purity, you know, so delicate and yet so desirous."

"Is she waiting for you?"

"She is the place I'm heading."

After the terrible toll of too many battlefields and blazed lives, Adman sets out on an odyssey to return home while Ada is struggling to keep her life together. Her father has died. Her world has crumbling when a rough-hewn ball of fire named Ruby arrives at Ada's Cold Mountain doorstep.


"And cow was milking. If I let her drink then cow is what I'm saying."

" I don't know you."

"Oh, lady, I swear that you need help. Here I am."

Renee Zellwege co-stars as Ruby Fills. A character she says she admired and knew from when she first read the Charles Frazier novel.

"These characters were so simple and yet complete and very experienced. And in the way he describes them. And I loved it. I understood it. It’s about change. It's about developing as a person in challenging times. It's about redefining what is important in life."

"Number one you got a horse and cow all day. I'm a worker. Number two, There is no man better than me. Cause there is no man right away. Oh there is full of mixture ."

Director A.G. also adapted the novel for the screen as he did with another wartime drama. The Oscar winning the English patient and be English born filmmaker acknowledges it was daunting for him to fully understand the War Between the States and it's continuing impact on the American character.

"I filled up the library of my house with Civil War books, with manuscripts, maps and photographs I still knew I had only scratched the surface of the mountain exists about the Civil War, of course you're right to say that before. As a screenwriter you can write a word before you can put a single word describe the scene. You have to feel comfortable that you know about how to inhabit it correctly what people are reading, what people thinking about what arguing about , what their conventions were, how people courted each other. And it took me more than a year of fulltime work before I could even adventure near a piece of paper to write a line of dialogue or an instruction because I juat felt that I had to immerse myself in this territory."

Texas-born Renee Zellweger believes writer/director Minghella's adaptation accurately captures the spirit of the era as vividly described in the original novel.

"I love literature that you can experience in a tangible way as you read it. You can smell these places that he describes. And you can feel /them. You can hear them. It becomes a very animated experience when you find someone like Charles Frazier who write as beautifully as he does.I guess that I 'm from the south that helps. You know because I recognize the land. I recognize the culture elements, the traditions in there, and the weather. I recognize that. You know i know what he is talking about,you know, what he means. I know why everybody is a little drowsy in August, you know."

Cold Mountain also features Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman and Brendan Gleeson. And the film was shot in rural Romania where director Anthony Minghella he could find unspoiled settings to double for the smoky mountains of North Carolina in the 1860s.

A hot tip for the success of the film “Cold Mountain”




Genteel Nicole

ANTHONY MINGHELLA'S new film “Cold Mountain”, a love story set against the American civil war, is the kind of movie Oscar loves, not least because every craft department is a star. For “Cold Mountain” Mr Minghella has reassembled the team that helped “The English Patient” win nine Academy awards, among them John Seale, cameraman, Dante Ferretti, designer, and Walter Murch, editor.

All departments get a chance to shine in the opening sequence portraying the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, Virginia. The Union soldiers tunnel under the Confederate camp and blow it up; when they attack and fall into the pit they've created, the Confederates slaughter them in turn. Mr Murch's editing pays tribute to the Battle of Shrewsbury sequence in Orson Welles's “Chimes at Midnight”. Like Welles, the makers of “Cold Mountain” mean to deny the audience support for either side of this war—and by extension, of any war.

After the battle, a Confederate soldier named Inman who was shot in the throat thinks back to his brief courtship three years earlier with Ada Monroe, a southern belle who came with her preacher father to live in the North Carolina village of Cold Mountain. Subsequently the film alternates between Ada, who orders Inman in a letter to return to her, and Inman, who deserts and embarks on the perilous journey home. Nicole Kidman's performance as Ada, whose genteel upbringing poorly equips her to survive deprivation and terror at the hands of marauders, reminds us what a movie star is, and Jude Law as Inman finally emerges from the character parts he has been playing to become a star in his own right.

But it is Renée Zellweger who steals the movie as Ruby, the begrimed, sharp-tongued hillbilly who helps Ada save her farm. Ruby and Ada are eventually joined by the widowed Sally Swanger (Kathy Baker), and in keeping with the film's feminism, Inman is helped by an old goat-herder (Eileen Atkins) and a young widow (Natalie Portman). Mr Minghella's encounter with Charles Frazier's novel has certainly not hurt his film-making. “The English Patient” was arty, but the ravishing photography of “Cold Mountain” powers a romantic story with wide appeal, which might just duplicate its predecessor's exploits come Oscar night.
