Which kind of universities do you prefer, universities whose graduates can find good jobs or universities where there are famous professors?
Although a good job offer is quite attractive for university graduates, benefits of universities with famous professors will far outweigh those of universities who concentrate merely on helping graduates chasing job opportunities.
In order to prepare their students for the fierce competition of job hunting, universities concentrate on job opportunities will offer more practical courses and ask the students to spend more time on internship, which might lead to undesirable effect on the long term development of these young people. Take some schools in Shanghai for example, the fact that their students will need to spend more than one year in internship leads to inadequacy of studying time. And this practice is challenged by more and more students. On one hand, they cannot feel any improvement from the education they received. On the other hand, although they can find a job easier than their peers, it is usually difficult for them to gain further career development. And study in these kinds of university can be quite boring. Under the influence of utilitarianism, social activities such as various clubs will be viewed as a waste of time. Few people will waste time on things like talking about one`s dream and cultivating a hobby, which actually are quite vital for a meaningful life.
On the contrary, universities with famous professors can be far more interesting and valuable for a sound development in all aspects. To begin with, famous professors in such universities can bring new ideas to their students, and usually they encourage their students to think creatively and try new things. This may not offer the students immediate help in hunting a job, but is definitely important for any true achievement. Also such professors will not simply offer students a fixed answer to a problem, but teach their students how to analysis problems and find solution by themselves. Take myself for example, when I study law in university, my profess will spend lots of time to tell the historical stories , debates, purpose, merits and demerits of a simple single rule, which will just be remembered by students in other schools. And although this seems meaningless for every day work, it does help me to understand the principle of law and offer me guidance when I confront with complicated cases. Last but not least, life in these universities is really interesting and meaningful. You can attend various clubs, study poems and dancing, share your dream with different people and etc. And such happy experience is a treasure of our youth.
For all the above reasons, I highly suggest people to choose universities which have famous professors even if they cannot offer an immediate help for finding a good job.
