ISSUE 41
Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling,
and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society
by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream
science.
Nonmainstream disciplines, such as astrology, fortune-telling, and etc., has attracted more attentions rather than extincted in spite of the fabulously rapid progress in so-called mainstream areas. Although nonmainsteams fields, however, are not considered by the public as real science, but the enthusiasm for them has not decreased but tended to increase in the contemporary society. (这一句 有although however but~~汗~自己看怎么回事)The speaker maintains that it is the nonmainstream areas that satisfy the human needs that are not addressed by mainstream ones. I basically agree with him or her, but I argue there must be some other reasons.开头没有什么好说的 注意我说的那句话就好了
Curiosity, as we all know, is human nature, which always motivates individuals to explore the unknown, especially the phenomena so-called mainstream science cannot come up with satisfactory explanations, so the nonmainstream ones come into vogue. Some disciplines of mainstream science burgeon from so called nonmainstream fields. Such as chemistry was born by alchemy, and astronomy is the ancestor of modern astronomy. (这两个astronomy不对吧~~)A case in point is Galileo, an Italian astronomer and physicist in the middle century(表示中世纪是用Middle Ages 况且这位同学是文艺复新时期的 比中世纪晚). Thanks to his ceaseless research on Copernicus's theory that the sun forms the center of the universe, which appeared abnormal and heterodox to ordinary people, the modern astronomy can so prosperous today. In a sense, the curiosity for the natural phenomena of the ancient people is somewhat like the embryo of the modern mainstream knowledge. In other words, nonmainstream might bring about other new kinds of science some day in the future, which will benefits our posterities.
On the other hand, curiosity for the unknown is human nature, which motivates people to explore what the existing science cannot come up with a satisfactory explanation. The nonmainstream science, in this sense, meets (with) people's needs of curiosity. One of the greatest physicists in 20th century, Albert Einstein (这里是不是应该有一个逗号?) once said (and I paragraph), the most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious, which is (这里有问题 前面的mysterious是形容词 加了the以后变成复数名词 后面要用are) the source of all true art(arts) and science. What we are curious to figure out today may be the common knowledge to every child in future, just as the Copernicus's theory does today. Nonmainstream science, to some degree, satisfies the human beings with some attractive imagination and not so scientific explanations, as well as cultivates people's enthusiasm for the exploration to the new area.
However, beneficial as the nonmainstream disciplines are, the overemphasis laid upon them may lead to superstition and ignorance. Take fortune-telling for example. It is believed by some people, especially those who are ill educated, that the god fixes everyone’s destiny and no one has the power to change it no matter how hard he or she tries. Admittedly, it is natural for every individual to worry about his or her destinies(复数形式吗?). However, the belief that destiny has been fixed(换个词吧 predetermined 吧) since one was born will probably prevent (这里怎么回事? 那个was是不是应该不要?)one from working hard, consequently he or she may miss the success that is really destined to him or her as long as endeavored.
In a word, science and knowledge need diversity, which helps to make all the fields compatible and progressive. Nonmainstream science, if reasonably applied, can possibly do contributions to the mainstream areas. Nevertheless, it is a double-edged sword; once over depended on, it might hamper the development in science and knowledge.
