Eridu Arcane plays acoustic music inspired by modern alternative bands like Dead Can Dance and Sopor Aeternus and the Ensemble of Shadows, as well as European classical music and irish folk music. Mainly based on classical guitar, piano and female soprano vocals, their music incorporates powerful and evocative melodic elements by the use of violins and flute, among others. The name Eridu Arcane comes from the ancient city Eridu, which was built in Sumeria in the honor of the gods, and is believed to be the first city ever built.

Eridu Arcane was formed in 1993 by Trond Tjostheim and Oddbjorn Hestnes. After being much impressed by the Dead Can Dance album Aion, the idea came to form a band based on acoustic instruments.

The first demo, titled Ars Poetica was produced in 1994 in the band's newly founded Deep Water studio, and featured 5 tracks. A mere 50 copies of the demo were pressed and had a very limited circulation.

By fall 1995, the members had moved out of their native Norway. The band then saw the beginning of a long period of low activity. However, songs were continually written, and by summer 1995, 5 new songs were picked out for Eridu Arcane's second demo. Due to several twists of ill fortune, the most serious being that the female vocalist moved out of the country, this recording was never finished.

In the winter of 1999, the recording of the CD "Refugee from the monochrome" was initiated. Six songs were selected from material written during the years the two band members had been abroad. The album featured vocalist Lindes Achre who had also been involved on the first demo, and was released in January 2000.

In the summer of 2000, Eridu Arcane once again entered the studio, this time with vocalist Anita Bekkeheien. The recording sessions for the new album continued one year until it was finished in May 2001.

Eridu Arcane signed to Cynfeirdd for the release of this album, titled "The dying of an ageless day" in February 2002.
