Issue42 学习类(学习是solitary的,还是需要collaboration)
42. Because learning is not a solitary activity but one that requires collaboration among people, students of all ages will benefit academically if they work frequently in groups."
The speaker asserts that students of all ages should work together more frequently in order to help to boost their academic performance because learning is not a solitary activity but need collaboration. While I totally agree that learning requires cooperation, I doubt the effects of the activities involving students of all ages, since age may cause gaps among the students. In my observation, learning sometimes is more of an individual work, especially in higher level that learning requires more quiet meditation.
It is no doubt that we can hardly learn only by reading books alone. An old proverb says “All study and no play makes Jack a dull boy” which manifests absolute individual study does not lead to whole person development. We can learn much from collaboration with others which cannot be attained by studying alone. In a group, different students play distinct roles, some may be leaders, some coordinators and some co-workers. When being these roles, students may learn how to cooperate, express their own opinions, point out others errors, all of which is part of the content of studying. Hereby collaboration is definitely helpful to students’ learning.
However, as I mentioned above, learning, to some extent, is more of a solitary work especially for those high grade students. The higher grade, the more contemplation is needed. It is hard to imagine what a conversation between a pupil and a sophomore student of philosophy about metaphysics can contribute to the sophomore’s deeper understanding of the topic. While collaboration with student of different age can increase the ability of student’s social ability, thinking is more needed when specific knowledge is required to solve profound problems.
Diverse age can also cause bad effects in a group. In the growing stage, even three years can form tremendous difference, consequently school arranges students of the same age into same grade in order to let students have better communication with classmates. Hence, a working group is better formed among the students of same grade than of all ages for the purpose of enhancing academic skills, because they have more in common and they can mutually stimulate the motivation of studying and working, especially for primary and middle school students whose burgeon are rather rapid, mentally and physically.
All in all, collaboration is highly salutary for learning and groups of proper formation may provide more opportunities for students to cooperate with others and change opinions. But in some condition that particular knowledge is required as the founding of communication, solitary meditation becomes more essential for the improvement of understanding than collaboration with students of different ages who can not be assured to master the knowledge. After all, individual thinking and group activities are both indispensable measures of learning. |
