Learning English is like learning to swim or learning to ply ball. We learn to weim by swimming, to play ball by playing ball, and to speak English by speaking English. A good ballplayer spends hours, days, and even years practicing. He learns to play the game on the baseball diamond. The more he practices, the better he plays. He has to learn to meet the situations of the game as they arise and react to them immediately. When a ball is coming toward the plate, the batter has to decide instantaneously what he is going to do. He cannot hesitate; he has to act and act at once. And so it is when are talking. The ideas we wish to espress come instantly to mind, but there is no time for us to stop and think  of how to put together the words we need. Acquiring the ability to use a language automatically, that is, without stopping to think, is a process of habit formation. Forming a habit, any kind of habit, requires much practice.

这的确是至理名言，任何技能—当然包括英语，关键是要随时随地的练习以养成习惯。

从语言学上讲，这段话对非谓语动词，尤其是分词和动词不定时的运用相当好，值得大家学习。
