52"Education encourages students to question and criticize, and therefore does little to promote social harmony."
10:45
According to speakers statement, to question and criticize do harm to social harmony. If the purpose of questioning and criticizing is only to let out dissatisfaction, and social harmony only means categorical obeying, then the statement is right. However, this is not the case, so I disagree with speaker's statement.
In the first place, maybe sometimes to question and criticize are only to show one's dissatisfaction, but this is definitely not the purpose of education. The goal of teachers to encourage students to question is to teach them how to face the old ideas and thoughts and to form new ideas and thoughts of their own. These new ideas will propel the society to develop both in matter and in culture, and thus will promote social harmony. The quick development of technology in recent years is a good example for this point. Every step of development of technology needs the new ideas and criticizing with old methods, and new technology brings out plenty of fortune for human society, with which people live in a more peaceful and satisfactory society.
In the second place, social harmony does not mean categorical obeying, on the contrary, it means all the people respect one another and share a common goal that is to live happily and enjoy their work. In the feudalism society, to obey the king and other officials is so important that it is the basic rule for the governance of society. In those days, the ordinary people had no right to question and criticize the affairs of the rulers. Therefore, it is natural to teach students to obey whatever they taught in then. In contrast, our new society is a democratic and equal one, and every citizen has the right to question and criticize the policies of government. Therefore, it is important to teach students how to question and criticize. Besides, to question and criticize is a good method to express one's own ideas, and thus obtain respects of others. Needless to say, a person who obeys others all the time will hardly gain respect. With mutual respect and understanding, the society will be more peaceful.
Admittedly, since the students are still young and immature, it is also important for education to teach them to avoid doubt of everything. The purpose of questioning and criticizing is to critically accept something, not to doubt everything. Sometimes, after questioning and criticizing, the students will find that the old ideas is right, then they should accept that old ideas instead of keeping questioning. If the students only know how to question and do not know how to accept, they will learn very little and do harm to social harmony.
In sum, to question and to criticize do good to social harmony. Without these spirits, the students will hardly contribute the society after they grow up, and do little to social harmony.
