Scientists and other researchers should focus their research on areas that are likely to benefit the greatest number of people.

Nowadays, should researchers concentrated on the fields where are likely to benefit more people has been most discussed. Some people think it is better for scientists to focus on the research area, which they are personally interested while others hold the opinion that researchers should conduct research, which will benefit the mass public. From my point of view, to a large extent, I disagree with the statement that researchers should focus on the areas that will benefit most of people. Researchers should choose the field of interests based on their own experience and passion. However, the popularity of research areas is the factor scientist should take into consideration secondly.
To begin with, scientific research needs researchers’ passion and faith. When a scientist has to focus on some research very popular yet he/she is not fond of, the result of the research cannot be expected satisfied. The process of the research as a whole could be a torturing to scientist. The goal of the research is to benefit people. However, in this scenario, the research result is challenging to benefit people. Thus, this approach twisted the original goal of the research itself.
On the other hand, if let researchers concentrated them on the realm where they interested in, the efficiency is reinforced and sometimes, scientific breakthroughs are achieved. Dr. Chen, a Chinese mathematician, focused on Goldbach’s conjecture for decades without any disturbance outside to force him give up the research topic which is meaningless to most of people. At last, he became the first one who proved Goldbach’s conjecture which confusing mathematicians for hundreds of years in the world.
Nevertheless, scientists should follow their passion and willingness to conduct researches, but the popularity should also take into consideration when they are choosing their research topics. The ultimate objective of research is to benefit the people. If a research is separated form the needs of society, even though it is more than interested to a professor, the professor should think twice when he is selecting the certain topic as his/her research subject. Currently, a lot of researches have been done are totally nonsense. They wasted the funding from tax payers on something cannot bring benefits back to the whole society. So for scientists, they should be careful to balance the personal interests and social benefits when they are conducting researches.
To sum up, it is save to say that researchers should pick up those research topics, which they are interested in after they carefully considered the social benefit of the research. It is to be successful alone that only follow personal interests or mass public benefits.
